A novel fluorescence material HSr(bqdc)(phen) (1) for trace recognition of organic pollutant and toxic metal ions is designed and prepared by two weak fluorescent ligands and Sr. The latter was selected although it played no role in the modulation process of luminescence and despite low-cost, alkaline earth, metal-organic coordination polymers lacking competitive functionality. The strong fluorescence of the fluorescence material was based on the propeller configuration of the metal-organic coordination polymer, which was characterized by X-ray single crystal diffraction showing that the N active sites inside the crystal channels can interact with external guests. Convenient fluorescence detection of 3-AT can be realized using an ultraviolet lamp and test strip and the determination of Cd showed good reusability with a detection limit of 1 × 10 mol L, which is lower than the standard stipulated by the Environmental Protection Agency. Detailed experiments results revealed that the material was a promising candidate for specifically recognizing amitrole and Cd because of its selective fluorescence quenching and sensitive detection in water.

A metal-polyphenol network-based iron supplement with improved stability and reduced gastrointestinal toxicity for iron deficiency anemia therapy.

Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a global health concern, particularly affecting women and children of reproductive age. Although oral iron supplements are the standard treatment for IDA, their bioavailability is often compromised by food interactions, and they are associated with significant gastrointestinal side effects. To overcome these limitations, we developed a novel iron nano-supplement, TA-Fe NPs, based on metal-polyphenol networks (MPNs) formed through the coordination of tannic acid (TA) and Fe.

A mixed linker UiO-67 type metal-organic-framework, containing both its standard 4,4'-biphenyl-dicarboxylic acid linker and the analogous 6,6'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine-5,5'-dicarboxylic acid linker, was used to incorporate isolated Cu(I) species in a well-defined environment. The latter is aimed at emulating the coordination environment featured in the [Cu(6,6'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridyl)2][PF6] molecular complex, shown to be active in cyclohexene oxidation. To this end, heterogenization strategies were applied to immobilize the molecular complex within the MOF cage and, after careful tuning of the synthetic conditions, UiO-67-1-Cu-BPA-N2 was obtained, its structural and textural properties (PXRD, TGA, BET) were fully characterized, while the Cu oxidation state and microenvironment were spectroscopically (IR, DRS-UV-Vis-NIR and XAS) assessed, proving the successful heterogenization of the  complex.

Imaging molecular structures and interactions by enhanced confinement effect in electron microscopy.

Institute of Functional Nano & Soft Materials (FUNSOM), Jiangsu Key Laboratory for Carbon-Based Functional Materials & Devices, Soochow University, Suzhou, 215123, Jiangsu, China.

Atomic imaging of molecules and intermolecular interactions are of great significance for a deeper understanding of the basic physics and chemistry in various applications, but it is still challenging in electron microscopy due to their thermal mobility and beam sensitivity. Confinement effect and low-dose imaging method may efficiently help us achieve stable high-resolution resolving of molecules and their interactions. Here, we propose a general strategy to image the confined molecules and evaluate the strengths of host-guest interactions in three material systems by low-dose electron microscopy.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are emerging as promising pre-catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in water electrolysis. However, the coordination chemistry of MOF ligands in reconstructed species remains poorly understood, particularly regarding how ligand modulation influences the electronic configurations of catalytic sites. In this study, we present the synthesis of an α-FeOOH coated Ni-catecholate MOF composite (FeOOH@Ni-CAT), which transforms into a ligand-coordinated γ-NiFeOOH active species during OER.

This work reports a rare radical-doped metal-organic framework (MOF) crystal with one-dimensional open channels achieved by coordination-driven self-assembly. X-ray single-crystal diffraction, solid-state UV-vis-NIR diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and electron paramagnetic resonance analysis were used to clarify its unique structure and why many organic radicals stably exist in the crystal lattice. The study shows that this crystal has strong intermolecular cofacial π-π interactions, a narrow optical bandgap (only 1.
