Colorimetric core/shell ZIF-8/PEO/PDA nanofibers for detection of fish spoilage.

Food Chem

February 2025

Department of Food Engineering, Faculty of Food Engineering, Middle East Technical University, 06800 Ankara, Turkiye. Electronic address:

Here, colorimetric nanofibers (NFs) based on polydiacetylene (PDA), zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), and poly(ethylene) oxide (PEO) were developed. First, the successful synthesis of ZIF-8 was illustrated with structural and morphological analysis. Next, shell/core PDA/PEO/ZIF-8 NFs, namely PPZ0, PPZ5, PPZ15, and PPZ25, were fabricated by coaxial electrospinning at various ZIF-8 concentrations in the core.

Tendon injuries often exhibit limited healing capacity, frequently complicated by peritendinous adhesion, posing a substantial challenge in clinical tendon repair. Although present biomaterial-based membranes offer a promising strategy for tendon treatment, their clinical application is hindered by inflammation-induced adhesion. Herein, this study presents a dual-functional biomimetic tendon sheath based on a coaxial electrospun nanofibrous membrane for enhancing tendon repair and simultaneously preventing peritendinous adhesion.

Engineering pH and Temperature-Triggered Drug Release with Metal-Organic Frameworks and Fatty Acids.

Molecules

November 2024

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Rowan University, Glassboro, NJ 08028, USA.

This study reports the successful synthesis of core-shell microparticles utilizing coaxial electrospray techniques, with zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) encapsulating rhodamine B (RhB) in the core and a phase change material (PCM) shell composed of a eutectic mixture of lauric acid (LA) and stearic acid (SA). ZIF-8 is well-recognized for its pH-responsive degradation and biocompatibility, making it an ideal candidate for targeted drug delivery. The LA-SA PCM mixture, with a melting point near physiological temperature (39 °C), enables temperature-triggered drug release, enhancing therapeutic precision.

High-power "nesting-doll" biofuel cell enabled by free-standing electrodes with inherent enzymatic function.

Biosens Bioelectron

February 2025

College of Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Qingdao Agricultural University, Qingdao, 266109, People's Republic of China.

Biofuel cell (BFC) is a type of green energy device based on the biocatalyst-mediated redox reaction. However, their relatively low performance has limited their wider application. Here, we proposed a novel all-in-one strategy to design the free-standing electrodes with the inherent enzyme-like activity and high conductivity, in which, the dynamic limitations of the enzyme-electrode interface were eliminated.

The microvascular bed plays a crucial role in establishing nutrient exchange and waste removal, as well as maintaining tissue metabolic activity in the human body. However, achieving microvascularization of engineered 3D tissue constructs is still an unsolved challenge. In this work, we developed biomimetic cell-laden hydrogel microfibers recapitulating oriented microvascular capillary-like networks by using a 3D bioprinting technique combined with microfluidics-assisted coaxial wet-spinning.
