An isomerization method was utilized to yield a novel near-infrared nonfullerene acceptor DTA-IC-M. By simply changing the linking fashion between the anthracene and neighboring thiophenes, a remarkable redshift (∼170 nm) of absorption was observed from DTA-IC-S to its isomer DTA-IC-M which shows a maximum absorption peak over 800 nm with a narrow bandgap of 1.35 eV. Due to the enhanced photo-to-current response in the near-infrared region, an improved short-circuit current of 12.96 mA cm was achieved for the DTA-IC-M based OSCs.

Understanding and effectively controlling molecular conformational changes are essential for developing responsive and dynamic molecular systems. Here, we report that an oriented external electric field (OEEF) is an effective catalyst for the cis-trans isomerization of stiff-stilbene, a key component of overcrowded alkene-based rotary motors. This reversible isomerization occurs under ambient conditions, is free from side reactions, and has been verified using ultraperformance liquid chromatography and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy.

Tuning Isomerism Effect in Organic Bulk Additives Enables Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells.

Nanomicro Lett

Organic additives with multiple functional groups have shown great promise in improving the performance and stability of perovskite solar cells. The functional groups can passivate undercoordinated ions to reduce nonradiative recombination losses. However, how these groups synergistically affect the enhancement beyond passivation is still unclear.

Here we present a simple gold-catalyzed one-pot reaction of easily available diarylbutadiynes, with trimethoxybenzene as solvent and reactant to synthesize 4,6,8-trimethoxyazulenes. The methoxy substituents, which render the azulene very electron-rich, enable a change of azulenes typical regioselectivity for electrophilic substitutions, which enables facile electrophilic 2-substitution with iodine, bromine, chlorine, selenium or sulfur. Especially the 2-haloazulenes which can usually only be obtained through lengthy multistep syntheses are valuable building blocks for the synthesis of 2-substituted azulene derivatives.

Interrupting Associative π-σ-π Isomerization Enables -Retentive Asymmetric Tsuji-Trost Reaction.

J Am Chem Soc

New Cornerstone Science Laboratory, State Key Laboratory of Organometallic Chemistry, Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, 345 Lingling Lu, Shanghai 200032, China.

The asymmetric Tsuji-Trost reaction has been extensively studied due to its importance in establishing stereogenic centers, often adjacent to an -olefin moiety in organic molecules. The generally preferential formation of chiral -olefin products is believed to result from the thermodynamically more stable -π-allylpalladium intermediate. The rapid associative π-σ-π isomerization makes it challenging to synthesize chiral -olefin products via the transient -π-allylpalladium intermediate.

Photoswitches are widely investigated molecules because upon exposure to selected light irradiation, they are able to undergo structural, and hence optical, changes. To fully exploit their responsiveness to irradiation, the quantum efficiency of the forward and back reactions is a fundamental parameter, whose accurate determination is critical. In this work, the spectral evolution of a biomimetic switch, which undergoes / photoinduced isomerization, is spectrophotometrically examined.
