An eco-friendly and low-cost lignosulfonate-based acidic carbonaceous catalyst (LS-SOH) was effectively fabricated using the sulfite pulping by-product of sodium lignosulfonate as a precursor by facile one-step simultaneous carbonization and sulfonation, and employed for the synthesis of promising biofuel furan derivatives from biorenewable feedstocks. The catalyst preparation conditions significantly affected the preparation and properties of LS-SOH. A relatively high catalyst preparation yield (40.4%) with strong -SOH density (1.33 mmol g) were achieved when the lignosulfonate was treated in concentrated HSO solution at 120 °C for 6 h. The preparation yield of LS-SOH was nearly twice as much as that of one-step prepared catalyst using alkaline lignin (another technical lignin from pulping) as a precursor. The as-prepared LS-SOH had similar textural characteristics to the frequently-used two-step prepared carbonaceous catalyst involving pyrolysis carbonization and sulfonation. LS-SOH was found to show good catalytic activity for the synthesis of 5-ethoxymethylfurfural (EMF) in ethanol medium, affording around 86%, 57% and 47% yields from 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), fructose and inulin, respectively. Also, a high HMF yield of 83% could be obtained from fructose when DMSO was replaced as reaction medium. The used LS-SOH was readily recovered by filtration, and remained active in recycle runs.

In modern agriculture, control of insect pests is achieved by using insecticides that can also have lethal and sublethal effects on beneficial non-target organisms. Here, we investigate acute toxicity and sublethal effects of four insecticides on the males' sex pheromone response and the female host finding ability of the Drosophila parasitoid Leptopilina heterotoma. The nicotinic acetylcholine receptor antagonists acetamiprid, flupyradifurone and sulfoxaflor, as well as the acetylcholinesterase inhibitor dimethoate were applied topically as acetone solutions.

The rising demand for plant-based meat analogues presents challenges in replicating the sensory qualities of animal meat. This study investigates the impact of Pichia-derived porcine myoglobin (PMb) and bovine hemoglobin (BHb) on the flavor profile, sensory attributes, macrostructure, color, and texture of high-moisture extruded soy protein concentrate-wheat gluten. The addition of PMb and BHb significantly altered the flavor profile by decreasing aldehyde content (hexanal and nonanal), while the contents of ketones (2,3-octanedione and 3,5-octadien-2-one), pyrazines (2-ethyl-6-methylpyrazine), and furans (2-pentylfuran) were increased.

Background: Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a prevalent male sexual disorder, commonly associated with hypertension, though the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood.

Objective: This study aims to explore the role of Fatty acid synthase (Fasn) in hypertension-induced ED and evaluate the therapeutic potential of the Fasn inhibitor C75.

Materials And Methods: Erectile function was assessed by determining the intracavernous pressure/mean arterial pressure (ICP/MAP) ratio, followed by the collection of cavernous tissue for transcriptomic and non-targeted metabolomic analyses.

Multiple Diels-Alder reactions are a powerful method to construct large asymmetric scaffolds, but these reactions often produce numerous isomers. We now report a triple Diels-Alder reaction between a cyclic furan trimer and -substituted maleimides, achieving selective synthesis of a single asymmetric tris-adduct. The stereoselectivity of cycloaddition to π-extended furan derivatives was clarified by the experimental analysis of intermediates and theoretical calculations.

Three new pyridine derivatives, irpelactedines A-C (1-3), and a new furan derivative, irpelactedine D (5), along with two structurally related known compounds, irpexidine A (4) and 5-carboxy-2-furanpropanoic acid (6), were isolated from the medicinal fungus Irpex lacteus SY1002. Their structures were elucidated through NMR and mass spectral analyses, combined with density functional theory calculations of ECD data. Evaluation of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activity revealed that compounds 1 and 3 displayed moderate inhibition, with IC50 values of 31.
