Iron(ii) acetylacetonate was suggested to be a better catalyst of the β-alkylation of 1-phenylethanol with benzyl alcohol to form 1,3-diphenyl-1-propanol. DFT calculations have been performed to study the internal mechanism, the structures of intermediates and transition states, and the exchange of electronic density in detail. The energetic results show that this β-alkylation reaction proceeds the hydrogen autotransfer mechanism and the catalytic cycle includes three sequential stages: (1) alcohol oxidation to produce aldehyde associated with hydride anion transfer, (2) cross-aldol condensation to form a chalcone and (3) chalcone reduction with multi-step hydrogenation. In order to study whether the only by-product, water, has clearly influenced the reaction, eight catalyst hydrogenation pathways and four catalyst dehydrogenation pathways have been studied. We are delighted to find that the presence of the only by-product, water, can significantly increase the reduction energy barrier of dihydrochalcone. The energy barrier of the catalyst's hydrogenation is less than 6 kcal mol. Our calculation results are fundamentally coincident with the experimental detections, and suggest that the crossing-coupling reaction occurs through a reliable mechanism. Two dihydrochalcone catalysts were designed on the basis of how the β-alkylation reaction proceeds.

The air-stable copper(II) catalyst [Cu(FOX-L1)(MeCN)][OTf] () is prepared from a fused meso-dipyridylbisoxazolidine (FOX-L1) and CuBr, followed by treatment with AgOTf. The compound is a catalyst for the dehydration of 1-phenylethanol to styrene (+HO) in over 95% yield at 1 mol % catalyst loading. Other alcohols (benzylic, tertiary, or allylic) are also efficiently dehydrated by this catalyst.

Alcohols are common alkylating agents and starting materials alternative to harmful alkyl halides. In this study, a simple, benign and efficient pathway was developed to synthesize 1,3-diphenylpropan-1-ols via the β-alkylation of 1-phenylethanol with benzyl alcohols. Unlike conventional borrowing hydrogen processes in which alcohols were activated by transition-metal catalyzed dehydrogenation, in this work, t-BuONa was suggested to be a dual-role reagent, namely, both base and radical initiator, for the radical coupling of aromatic alcohols.

Aromatic hydrocarbons like benzene, toluene, xylene, and ethylbenzene (BTEX) can escape into the environment from oil and gas operations and manufacturing industries posing significant health risks to humans and wildlife. Unlike conventional clean-up methods used, biological approaches such as bioremediation can provide a more energy and labour-efficient and environmentally friendly option for sensitive areas such as nature reserves and cities, protecting biodiversity and public health. BTEX contamination is often concentrated in the subsurface of these locations where oxygen is rapidly depleted, and biodegradation relies on anaerobic processes.

The conjugation of gold complexes with proteins has proved to be interesting and effective in obtaining artificial metalloenzymes as catalysts with improved properties such as higher stability, activity and selectivity. However, the design and precise regulation of their structure as protein nanostructured forms level remains a challenge. Here, we have designed and constructed a gold nanoparticles-enzyme bioconjugate, by tailoring the formation of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) at two specific sites on the structure of an alkalophilic lipase from (GTL).

Tea () flowers emit a large amount of volatiles that attract pollinators. However, few studies have characterized temporal and spatial variation in tea floral volatiles. To investigate the distribution of volatiles within tea flowers and their variation among opening stages, volatile components from different parts of tea flowers and different opening stages were collected by headspace solid-phase microextraction and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.
