The catalytic C-H alkylation with alkenes is of much interest and importance, as it offers a 100% atom efficient route for C-C bond construction. In the past decade, great progress in rare-earth catalysed C-H alkylation of various heteroatom-containing substrates with alkenes has been made. However, whether or how a heteroatom-containing substrate would influence the coordination or insertion of an alkene at the catalyst metal center remained elusive. In this work, the mechanism of Sc-catalysed C-H alkylation of sulfides with alkenes and dienes has been carefully examined by DFT calculations, which revealed that the alkene insertion could proceed a sulfide-facilitated mechanism. It has been found that a similar mechanism may also work for the C-H alkylation of other heteroatom-containing substrates such as pyridine and anisole. Moreover, the substrate-facilitated alkene insertion mechanism and a substrate-free one could be switched by fine-tuning the sterics of catalysts and substrates. This work provides new insights into the role of heteroatom-containing substrates in alkene-insertion-involved reactions, and may help guide designing new catalysis systems.

Cp*Co(III)-catalyzed -alkylation/alkenylation of anilides.

A highly practical and efficient Cp*Co(III)-catalyzed C-H alkylation/alkenylation reaction of anilides with maleimides and acrylates was developed, during which a weakly coordinating amide carbonyl group functioned as the directing group. This approach features high efficiency, good functional group tolerance, and broad substrate scope, and a variety of 3-substituted succinimides and -alkenylated anilides were synthesized in moderate to excellent yields. Furthermore, the reaction is highly selective, affording mono--alkylated/alkenylated products only.

The reaction of three equivalents of LiCH(SiMe3)2 with TiCl3(NMe3)2 afforded the rare homoleptic Ti(III) alkyl Ti{CH(SiMe3)2}3 (1) which crystallized as blue needles in 32 % yield. Single crystal X-Ray data for 1 showed a trigonal pyramidal coordination geometry around titanium, which could be ascribed to weak interactions between the C-H bonds and the Ti(III) atom based on computational results. X-band EPR spectroscopy give spectral parameters consistent with the proposed Ti(III) formulation.

Palladium-catalyzed allylic C-H alkylation of terminal olefins with 3-carboxamide oxindoles.

Chongqing Research Center for Pharmaceutical Engineering, College of Pharmacy, Chongqing Medical University, Chongqing 400016, China.

A novel palladium-catalyzed allylic C-H alkylation of terminal olefins with 3-carboxamide oxindoles is described. A variety of new 3-carboxamide-3-allylation oxindoles with an all-carbon quaternary center were obtained in moderate to good yields (up to 99%). In addition, the asymmetric version of this reaction was also explored, providing moderate enantioselectivity.

Henan Provincial Engineering and Technology Research Center for Precise Synthesis of Fluorine-Containing Drugs. College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Anyang Normal University, Anyang, 455000, P. R. China.

A TEMPO-mediated β-ketoalkylation of enaminoesters with cyclopropanols under metal-free conditions is herein described. This reaction provides a straightforward and highly efficient route to β-keto alkyl substituted enaminoesters for the first time, which could be rapidly and efficiently converted into synthetically useful 2-alkoxycarbonyl functionalized 1,5-diketones. Moreover, the practicability of this protocol is successfully demonstrated by scale-up experiments and the late-stage functionalization of natural products and pharmaceutically relevant molecules.

Alkyl nickel intermediates relevant to catalytic processes often feature agostic stabilization, but relatively little is known about the situation in oligonickel systems. The dinickel(I) complex K[LNi], which is based on a compartmental pyrazolato-bridged ligand L with two β-diketiminato chelate arms, or its masked version, the dihydride complex [KL(Ni-H)] that readily releases H, oxidatively add methyl tosylate to give diamagnetic [LNi(CH)] () with (Ni···Ni) ≈ 3.7 Å.
