A novel electron deficient building block [2,2'-bithiophene]-4,4'-dicarboxamide (BTDCA) was designed to lower the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy level of polythiophenes in order to achieve a higher open circuit voltage ( ) and thus a higher power conversion efficiency in polymer solar cells (PSCs). BTDCA dibromo monomers were conveniently synthesized in four steps, and were used to prepare three thiophene-based D-A polymers, P(BTDCA66-BT) (66BT), P(BTDCA44-BT) (44BT) and P(BTDCA44-TT) (44TT). All the polymers exhibited unipolar hole transport properties, exhibiting mobilities in the range of ∼10 to 10 cm V s with the highest hole mobility of up to 1.43 × 10 cm V s achieved for 44BT in bottom-gate bottom-contact organic thin film transistors (OTFTs). In PSCs, these polymers achieved high 's of 0.81-0.87 V when PCBM or ITIC was used as acceptor. When 44TT was used as donor and ITIC was used as acceptor, a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of up to 4.5% was obtained, a significant improvement when compared with the poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT):ITIC devices, which showed the highest PCE of merely 0.92%.

Crystallinity, stability, and complexity are significant factors to consider in the design and development of covalent organic frameworks (COFs). Among various building blocks used, 1,3,5-triformylphloroglucinol (Tp) is notable for enhancing both crystallinity and structural stability in COFs. Tp facilitates the formation of β-ketoenamine-linked COFs through keto-enol tautomerism when reacted with aromatic amines.

Here we present a simple gold-catalyzed one-pot reaction of easily available diarylbutadiynes, with trimethoxybenzene as solvent and reactant to synthesize 4,6,8-trimethoxyazulenes. The methoxy substituents, which render the azulene very electron-rich, enable a change of azulenes typical regioselectivity for electrophilic substitutions, which enables facile electrophilic 2-substitution with iodine, bromine, chlorine, selenium or sulfur. Especially the 2-haloazulenes which can usually only be obtained through lengthy multistep syntheses are valuable building blocks for the synthesis of 2-substituted azulene derivatives.

Microsensor systems for cell metabolism - from 2D culture to organ-on-chip (2019-2024).

Lab Chip

January 2025

Laboratory for Electrical Instrumentation and Embedded Systems, IMTEK - Department of Microsystems Engineering, University of Freiburg, Georges-Köhler-Allee 103, 79110 Freiburg, Germany.

Cell cultures, organs-on-chip and microphysiological systems become increasingly relevant as models, , in drug development, disease modelling, toxicology or cancer research. It has been underlined repeatedly that culture conditions and metabolic cues have a strong or even essential influence on the reproducibility and validity of such experiments but are often not appropriately measured or controlled. Here we review microsensor systems for cell metabolism for the continuous measurement of culture conditions in microfluidic and lab-on-chip platforms.

Association Between Circulating Fatty Acids and Blood Pressure: A Review.

Curr Nutr Rep

January 2025

Endocrinology and Nephrology Research Axis, CHU de Québec Research Center, CHU of Quebec-Laval University, CHUL - 2705, Boulevard. Laurier, Quebec, G1V 4G2, Canada.

Purpose Of Review: High blood pressure (BP) or hypertension (HTN) remains key risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Circulating fatty acids (FAs) in the blood can affect directly cardiovascular hemodynamics and serves as building blocks for endocrine mediators modifying inflammatory processes and vascular function. This review aims to describe optimal circulating FA profiles for BP to adjust dietary recommendations for HTN prevention.
