Photocatalytic transformation of nitrate (NO) in wastewater into ammonia (NH) is a challenge in the detoxification and recycling of limited nitrogen resources. In particular, previously reported photocatalysts cannot promote the reaction using water as an electron donor. Herein, we report that copper-doped titanium dioxide (Cu-TiO) powders, prepared via the sol-gel method and subsequent calcination, promote NO-to-NH reduction in water.

Engineering Active Interfaces on the Surface of Porous Single-Crystalline TiO Monoliths for Enhanced Catalytic Activity and Stability.

Research (Wash D C)

January 2025

Key Laboratory of Design & Assembly of Functional Nanostructures, Fujian Institute of Research on the Structure of Matter, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Fuzhou, Fujian 350002, China.

The engineering design and construction of active interfaces represents a promising approach amidst numerous initiatives aimed at augmenting catalytic activity. Herein, we present a novel approach to incorporate interconnected pores within bulk single crystals for the synthesis of macroscopic porous single-crystalline rutile titanium oxide (R-TiO). The porous single crystal (PSC) R-TiO couples a nanocrystalline framework as the solid phase with pores as the fluid phase within its structure, providing unique advantages in localized structure construction and in the field of catalysis.

Direct TiH powder production by the reduction of TiO using Mg in Ar and H mixed gas atmosphere.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Research Institute of Energy and Resources, Seoul National University, 1 Gwanak-ro, Gwanak-gu, Seoul, 08826, Republic of Korea.

To develop a direct production process for TiH powder from TiO, the reduction of TiO using Mg in molten MgCl - KCl salt under a high hydrogen chemical potential was investigated. The reduction of nano-sized TiO powder was conducted at 973 - 1073 K under an Ar or Ar and 10% H mixed gas atmosphere when the mass ratios of Mg to feed and salt to feed were 1.14 - 2.

Photodynamic bactericidal nanomaterials in food packaging: From principle to application.

J Food Sci

January 2025

Shandong Peanut Research Institute, Key Laboratory of Peanut Biology and Breeding, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Qingdao, PR China.

Compared to traditional preservatives, photodynamic inactivation (PDI) offers a promising bactericidal approach due to its nontoxic nature and low propensity for microbial resistance. In this paper, we initially investigate the principles and antibacterial mechanisms underlying PDI. We then review factors influencing PDI's germicidal efficacy in food preservation.

In this study, a highly crystalline anatase/rutile mixed phase carrageenan/TiO nanocomposite with a larger surface area was synthesized via the sol-gel process and calcined at 450 °C and 650 °C. The synthesized composite materials were characterized by FTIR, XRD, SEM, EDX, TEM, BET and TGA. FTIR confirms the presence of C-Ti-O bond formation in composite.
