Polysubstituted furans were prepared in moderate to good yields from various sulfur ylides and alkyl acetylenic carboxylates. The direct reactions of dimethylsulfonium acylmethylides with dialkyl acetylenedicarboxylates afforded dialkyl furan-3,4-dicarboxylates through a tandem sequence of Michael addition, intramolecular nucleophilic addition, 4π ring opening, intramolecular Michael addition, and elimination. The method was extended to synthesize furan-3-carboxylate, -2,4-dicarboxylates, and -2,3,4-tricarboxylates as well. The current method provides a direct and simple strategy in the synthesis of structurally diverse polysubstituted furans with mono to tricarboxylate groups from safe and readily available dimethylsulfonium acylmethylides and different alkyl acetylenic carboxylates.

A new sequential deprotonation strategy of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and propargyl alcohol in the presence of a base was developed for the generation of the α-hydroxyl carbanion, which enables rapid and controllable access to a wide range of valuable highly functionalized furans in one pot from alkynes and aldehydes under transition-metal- and additive-free conditions. Preliminary mechanistic studies revealed the crucial role of the base and DMSO. More importantly, deuterium labeling experiments confirmed the formation of the α-hydroxyl carbanion.

A copper-catalyzed regioselective annulation reaction, conducted without ligands or oxidants, has been developed for the preparation of multisubstituted furans from the readily available starting materials, β-keto esters and propargyl acetates. This process accommodates a wide range of functional groups, resulting in furan skeletons with diverse substitution patterns. The method's potential synthetic utility is highlighted by its applicability in gram-scale preparations and late-stage modifications of natural products.

A method for the synthesis of furans bearing indoline skeletons was developed an intramolecular palladium-catalyzed 5- cyclization/etherification cascade of -propargyl arylamines containing a 1,3-dicarbonyl side chain. This method realized the first capture of vinyl carbopalladiums by ketones as -nucleophiles and showed a wide range of substrate tolerability affording trisubstituted furans in various yields. The enantioselective version for this domino process and diverse derivatizations of the reaction products were also studied.

The effective and mild [4+1] annulation of ninhydrin-derived MBH carbonates with α,β-unsaturated ketones has been developed, providing a wide range of multisubstituted furans in high yields (up to 90%) with excellent β-regioselectivities. In contrast, the polysubstituted cyclopentenes bearing dispiro-bisindanedione motifs were obtained classical [3+2] annulations by employing ninhydrin-derived MBH carbonates with 2-arylidene-1,3-indandiones under the same catalytic conditions. Furthermore, the structures of two kinds of cycloadducts were straightforwardly confirmed through X-ray diffraction analysis.
