Background: Manual operations of the hydraulic jack device can become ergonomic stressors for the musculoskeletal system because of the required operational forces, muscle activities, or working postures. However, the usability of the hydraulic jack has not been fully explored for non-professional personnel.

Objectives: To evaluate the musculoskeletal loads during manual operations of a hydraulic jack based on the ergonomic postural analysis and electromyographyMETHODS:Nine men operated the lever of a hydraulic jack with three positions: parallel to and near (P-N), parallel to and far from (P-F), and orthogonal to the jack lever (O). Postural loads were evaluated by Loading on the Upper Body Assessment (LUBA), an ergonomic observational method, and were classified into action categories. The surface electromyogram of eight muscles and the subjective sense of burden were also measured.

Results: The initial force for lever pushing reached 40-80 N and exceeded the recommended forces for the unusual postures. The overall assessment of LUBA showed that 31% of working postures observed in O position require immediate consideration and corrective action and the maximum holding time estimated was < 1 minute. The postural load increased due to the shoulder joint abduction in the P-F and O positions and due to the trunk rotation in O position.

Conclusions: The results suggest that operating the hydraulic jack cause considerable postural loads and manual forces insufficient for several minutes of manual task. Therefore, improving working methods and tool designs are needed to improve usability and decrease the risk of musculoskeletal disorders during jack operations.

To produce samples for both material testing and molded sheets/parts, this article details an open-source scientific cold and hot press design. It consists of two independent and modular upper and lower plate (929 cm) assemblies each containing four 125 W insulated steel strip heaters. The steel housing for these heaters is entirely modular and designed for ease of manufacture, assembly, and customization.

Article Synopsis
  • Scientists studied how tunnel linings made of hard rock can fail by doing experiments in a lab.
  • They used lots of sensors and cameras to measure different factors like pressure and load during the tests.
  • Two main problems were tested: heavy rock blocks pressing down and areas where the concrete wasn't sticking well anymore.

Article Synopsis
  • Genitalia in insects, particularly in the dancefly genus Rhamphomyia, show rapid evolution and variability, warranting research into their function and evolutionary significance.
  • Researchers used synchrotron µCT technology to analyze male genitalia across five dancefly species, discovering a novel ejaculatory system similar to a hydraulic jack that enhances muscle power for ejaculation.
  • The evolved system allows for a significant increase in ejaculation power, thought to have developed due to sexual selection favoring strong ejaculation through a specialized morphology of the phallus and spermathecal duct.

A simple weighable lysimeter was designed, constructed, and calibrated for measuring the water requirements and crop coefficients of shallow-rooted crops. It has a portable weighing mechanism to quantify changes in soil moisture content. The weighing mechanism consists of a horizontal steel bar, a hydraulic car jack, both ends hooked vertical steel bars, a stand, and a digital weighing balance.

Managing diffuse pollution from agricultural land requires a spatially explicit risk assessment that can be applied over large areas. Major components of such assessments are the precise definition of both channel networks that often originate as small channels and streams, and Hydrologically Sensitive Areas (HSAs) of storm runoff that occur on land surfaces. Challenges relate to regions of complex topography and land use patterns, particularly those which have been heavily modified by arterial drainage.
