The PC12 cell line has been widely used as an model for studying neuronal differentiation and identifying the factors affecting the process. It has the ability to differentiate in the presence of nerve growth factor (NGF), resulting in neural extensions called dendrites and axons. In this study, first the impact of randomly distributed multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate (PEGDMA) on PC12 cell differentiation was investigated in terms of neurite length, number of neurite per cell and differentiation marker gene expression profile. Then, dielectrophoretically aligned MWCNTs in PEGDMA was used to guide and support the neuronal differentiation of PC12 cells in the presence of NGF. The method is expected to be useful in revealing the nanotopographical role in fundamental studies and understanding of nanotopographical effects for biomedical applications on nerve regeneration.

Background: Transfer of the supinator motor branches to the posterior interosseous nerve (SPIN) was first described as a reliable method of restoration of digit extension in cases of paralysis when there is retained function in the 5th and 6th cervical nerve roots with loss of function in the 8th cervical nerve root.
Methods: We performed a retrospective review of all the SPIN transfers that were performed in our unit which included 16 limbs in 14 patients over a 6-year period. The median age was 49 years (range 22-74).

Background: The loss of finger control in individuals with neuromuscular disorders significantly impacts their quality of life. Electroencephalography (EEG)-based brain-computer interfaces that actuate neuroprostheses directly via decoded motor intentions can help restore lost finger mobility. However, the extent to which finger movements exhibit distinct and decodable EEG correlates remains unresolved.

The complex relationship between inflammation, its effects on neuronal excitability and the ensuing plasticity of dorsal root ganglion (DRG) sensory neurons remains to be fully explored. In this study, we have employed a system of experiments assessing the impact of inflammatory conditioned media derived from activated immune cells on the excitability and activity of DRG neurons and how this relates to subsequent growth responses of these cells. We show here that an early phase of increased neuronal activity in response to inflammatory conditioned media is critical for the engagement of plastic processes and that neuronal excitability profiles are linked through time to the structural phenotype of individual neurons.

Objective: Targeted transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (tTENS) is a non-invasive neural stimulation technique that involves activating sensory nerve fibers to elicit tactile sensations in a distal, or referred, location. Though tTENS is a promising approach for delivering haptic feedback in virtual reality or for use by those with somatosensory deficits, it was not known how the perception of tTENS might be influenced by changing wrist position during sensorimotor tasks.
Approach: We worked with 12 able-bodied individuals and delivered tTENS by placing electrodes on the wrist, thus targeting the ulnar, median, and radial nerves, and eliciting tactile sensations in the hand.

Experimental design in language cognition research often involves presenting language material while measuring associated behavior and/or neural activity. To make the collected data easily and fully analyzable by both the original data authors and others, it is important to have detailed information about the stimulus presentation events, including the nature and properties of the presented stimuli, using a common vocabulary and syntax. We present HED LANG, a library extension of the Hierarchical Event Descriptors (HED) event annotation schema for time series behavioral and neuroimaging data.
