Hollow ZnO microspheres were successfully synthesized by a hydrothermal method and then functionalized with graphene oxide (GO) flakes, previously obtained through electrochemical oxidation. Their photocatalytic activity toward the photodegradation of salicylic acid under UV light irradiation was evaluated by UV-Vis spectroscopy. Unfunctionalized microspheres and ZnO functionalized with chemically oxidized graphene were also studied as comparative terms. The hybrid materials of ZnO with both electrochemical and chemical GO gave a similar photodegradation yield of ∼28% against 18% of the non-functionalized microspheres. The similar degradation yields and rate constants obtained with the two GO synthetic methods indicate that electrochemical oxidation of GO represents an eco-friendly option over traditional methods for photocatalytic degradation systems.

An inevitable overoxidation process is considered as one of the most challenging problems in the direct conversion of methane (CH4) to methanol (CH3OH), which is limited by the uncontrollable cracking of key intermediates. Herein, we have successfully constructed a photocatalyst, the Fe-doped ZnO hollow polyhedron (Fe/ZnOHP), for the highly selective photoconversion of CH4 to CH3OH under mild conditions. In-situ experiments and density functional theory calculations confirmed that the introduction of Fe was able to decrease the energy level of the O 2p orbital, which passivated the activity of lattice oxygen in ZnO nanocrystals.

The escalating global problem of antibiotic contamination in wastewater demands innovative and sustainable remediation technologies. This paper presents a highly efficient photocatalytic material for water purification: a three-dimensional ultra-porous structure of interconnected GaN hollow microtetrapods (aero-GaN), its performance being further enhanced by noble metal nanodot functionalization. This novel aero-nanomaterial achieves more than 90 % of tetracycline degradation within 120 min under UV and solar irradiation, demonstrating its effectiveness in both static and dynamic flow conditions, with the potential for reuse and recyclability.

ZnO nanoparticles with high safety and stability are often used as active ingredients in sunscreens to protect the skin from ultraviolet rays. However, ZnO nanoparticles are easy to agglomerate, which will significantly affect the ultraviolet absorption and bacteriostatic properties, and the reactive oxygen species induced by the photocatalytic activity may result in irreversible secondary damage to the skin. Herein, the ZnO nanoparticles are dispersed uniformly on the surface of latex particles, and these composite particles are used as shell materials to construct self-assembled colloidosomes by high-gravity technology, which can improve the application properties with synergistic enrichment of the hollow structure.
