Magnetic nanoparticles with specific surface features are interesting materials for biomedical applications. The combination of molecular interactions on small particles with macroscopic cohesion forces offers unique opportunities. This work reports the synthesis of magnetic core-shell nanoparticles with alkylimidazolium coated surface for effective DNA extraction. A magnetic FeO core was coated with a silica shell and functionalized with an organic halide. This enabled a surface coating with organic cations to mediate effective molecular interactions with polyanionic DNA. The large surface area of the ∼20 nm small particles with a magnetization of 25 emu g enabled high DNA particle loading of 1/30 m% with easy isolation based on an external magnetic field. Moreover, the coating of the particles stabilized DNA against ultrasound initiated fragmentation.

Food allergy is increasingly prevalent and poses notable health risks, which underscores the urgent need to develop reliable and sensitive detection methods for effective identification of food allergens. This study aims to address the limitations of existing methods by developing an immunoassay utilizing bacteriophage/carbon dots (CDs)@silica core-shell nanospheres. Two CDs with different emission wavelengths (513 nm for Green CDs, 645 nm for Red CDs) were synthesized for signal development and amplification.

detection suffers from slow analysis time and high costs, along with the need for specificity. While state-of-the-art electrochemical biosensors are cost-efficient and easy to implement, their sensitivity and analysis time still require improvement. In this work, we present a paper-based electrochemical biosensor utilizing magnetic core-shell FeO@CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (MQDs) to achieve fast detection, low cost, and high sensitivity.

Flow cytometry-based immunoassays are valuable in biomedical research and clinical applications due to their high throughput and multianalyte capability, but their adoption in areas such as food safety and environmental monitoring is limited by long assay times and complex workflows. Rapid, simplified bead-based cytometric immunoassays are needed to make these methods viable for point-of-need applications, especially with the increasing accessibility of miniaturized cytometers. This work introduces superparamagnetic hybrid polystyrene-silica core-shell microparticles as promising alternatives to conventional polymer beads in competitive cytometric immunoassays.
