Heteroleptic manganese compounds, [Mn(tmhd)(TMEDA)Cl] (1), [Mn(tmhd)(dmamp)] (2), Mn(tmhd)(edpa)(μ-THF) (3), [Mn(dmampea)(NEt)] (4), and Mn(dmampea)(Pr-MeAMD) (5), were synthesized and characterized. Compound 5 was a volatile liquid. Structural analysis revealed that 1-4 were dimers. Compounds 1 and 3, 2, and 4 had distorted octahedral, distorted trigonal-bipyramidal, and distorted tetrahedral geometries around the Mn centers, respectively. Based on thermogravimetric analysis, the residues of 2 and 3 were expected to be MnO and MnO, respectively. According to thermogravimetric analysis, 4 showed a higher residual value, whereas 5 exhibited a lower value than those expected for manganese nitrides.

The title compound, [Mn(CH)(CHO)]PF or [(Cht)Mn(Cp'COH)]PF, with Cht = cyclo-hepta-trienyl and Cp' = CH, is an air-stable, purple, heteroleptic, cationic sandwich complex with manganese in oxidation state +I and π-coordinating cyclo-hepta-trienyl and cyclo-penta-dienyl ligands. The latter ligand carries the carb-oxy-lic acid functionality. This 'tromancenium-8-carb-oxy-lic acid' with hexa-fluorido-phosphate as counter-ion represents a rare case of a cationic carb-oxy-lic acid.

A series of mononuclear lanthanoidate complexes isolated as [BuN][Ln(QCl)] 1Ln (QCl = 5-chloro-8-quinolinolate; Ln = Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, and Er) have been prepared, characterised, and used as facile precursors to obtain a series of new heterobimetallic complexes as crystalline materials. Reaction of 1Ln with manganese nitrate forms [LnMn(QCl)] (2Ln, where Ln = Tb, Dy, Er and Yb) which have been structurally characterised in the cases of 2Tb and 2Yb. The heteroleptic trinuclear complex [Dy(QCl)Cl(OH)], 3, has also been obtained.

Article Synopsis
  • The study revisits an overlooked manganese sandwich complex that has 18 valence electrons, first discovered about 50 years ago by Fischer and Pauson, showcasing its unique properties.
  • Advanced photochemical methods were developed to quickly synthesize the original complex and its functionalized variations with various substituents.
  • Comprehensive analyses using various spectroscopic techniques and quantum chemical calculations reveal unique electrochemical behaviors and bonding characteristics that differentiate these tromancenium salts from similar complex salts of cobalt and early transition metals.
