In this paper, control over the emission of sulfur trioxide aerosols was investigated based on heterogeneous condensation in the wet flue gas desulfurization process. The influence of the deflectors tray of the desulfurization tower on the removal performance of the sulfur trioxide aerosols was also studied. The results show that the critical supersaturation degree of sulfur trioxide aerosols is in inverse proportion to the sizes. Heterogeneous condensation has a significant effect on the reduction of sulfur trioxide aerosols. The number concentration of the sulfur trioxide aerosols with sizes <0.1 μm decreases, while the number concentration of sizes >0.1 μm increases at the outlet with this method. The relative humidity of the flue gas is likely to be the most influential in the formation of a supersaturated environment and the removal of sulfur trioxide aerosols. Addition of the tray in the desulfurization tower also increases the reduction of sulfur trioxide aerosols. Heterogeneous condensation can improve the removal efficiency of sulfur trioxide aerosols by 14.3% as well as the installation of a tray by 21.4%.

Sulfated Polysaccharides Inhibit CaOx Stone Formation by Inhibiting Calcium Oxalate Crystallization, Cellular Inflammation, and Crystal Adhesion.

J Agric Food Chem

January 2025

Institute of Biomineralization and Lithiasis Research, College of Chemistry and Materials Science, Jinan University, Guangzhou 510632, China.

Hyperoxaluria can easily induce calcium oxalate (CaOx) crystals and cause cell damage, thereby increasing the risk of kidney stone formation. In this study, three sulfated polysaccharides (PSPs) were obtained by the sulfur trioxide-pyridine method. The antioxidant activity of PSPs and the inhibitory effects of PSPs on CaOx crystallization, cellular oxidative damage, and cellular inflammation were explored in vitro, and PSPs were used to treat hyperoxaluria-induced crystallization model mice in order to validate the stone-preventive effect of PSPs in vivo.

Sulfonation of IAA in Urtica eliminates its DR5 auxin activity.

Plant Cell Rep

December 2024

Department of Experimental Biology, Palacký University Olomouc, Šlechtitelů 27, CZ-77900, Olomouc, Czech Republic.

N-Sulfonated IAA was discovered as a novel auxin metabolite in Urtica where it is biosynthesized de novo utilizing inorganic sulfate. It showed no auxin activity in DR5::GUS assay, implying possible inactivation/storage mechanism. A novel auxin derivative, N-sulfoindole-3-acetic acid (IAA-N-SOH, SIAA), was discovered in stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) among 116 sulfonated metabolites putatively identified by a semi-targeted UHPLC-QqTOF-MS analysis of 23 plant/algae/fungi species.

Article Synopsis
  • Heparins, derived from animal tissues, have supply limitations and risks like bleeding and thrombocytopenia, prompting research into synthetic alternatives.
  • A new approach synthesized a heparin-like anticoagulant, sulfated octasaccharide (SRO), demonstrating effective anticoagulant activity in mice and humans with less bleeding risk.
  • This synthetic product, named octaparin, offers a promising replacement for traditional animal-sourced heparin.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 has spurred the urgent need for effective antiviral strategies. In this work, we explored the potential of oversulfated kappa-carrageenan (OSKC) in spray-coated facemasks for SARS-CoV-2 inhibition pathway. The sulfated derivative was synthesized with sulfur trioxide pyridine complex in dimethylformamide solution.

The reaction of sulfur trioxide (SO) and thiobenzoic acid (CHCOSH) is investigated in the gas phase under supersonic jet conditions. Rotational spectroscopy of the parent and several isotopically substituted derivatives, in conjunction with DFT calculations at the M06-2X/6-311++G(3df,3pd) level of theory, identify the product as thiobenzoic sulfuric anhydride, CHC(=S)OSOOH. Single point CCSD(T)/CBS(D-T)//M06-2X/6-311++G(3df,3pd) calculations place the electronic energy of the product anhydride 114 kJ/mol lower than that of SO+CHCOSH at infinite separation.
