A series of four novel microporous alkaline earth metal-organic frameworks (AE-MOFs) containing methanetetrabenzoate linker (MTB) with composition {[Ca(μ-MTB)]·2DMF·4HO} (UPJS-6), {[Ca(μ-O)(μ-MTB)(HO)]·4DMF·4HO} (UPJS-7), {[Sr(μ-MTB)]·4DMF·7HO} (UPJS-8) and {[Ba(μ-MTB)(HO)]·2DMF·4HO} (UPJS-9) (UPJS = University of Pavol Jozef Safarik) have been successfully prepared and characterized. The framework stability and thermal robustness of prepared materials were investigated using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and high-energy powder X-ray diffraction (HE-PXRD). MOFs were tested as adsorbents for different gases at various pressures and temperatures. Nitrogen and argon adsorption showed that the activated samples have moderate BET surface areas: 103 m g (N)/126 m g (Ar) for UPJS-7'', 320 m g (N)/358 m g (Ar) for UPJS-9'' and UPJS-8'' adsorbs only a limited amount of N and Ar. It should be noted that all prepared compounds adsorb carbon dioxide with storage capacities ranging from 3.9 to 2.4 wt% at 20 °C and 1 atm, and 16.4-13.5 wt% at 30 °C and 20 bar. Methane adsorption isotherms show no adsorption at low pressures and with increasing pressure the storage capacity increases to 4.0-2.9 wt% of CH at 30 °C and 20 bar. Compounds displayed the highest hydrogen uptake of 3.7-1.8 wt% at -196 °C and 800 Torr among MTB containing MOFs.

Amyloplasts are the sites of starch synthesis and accumulation. Little is known about amyloplast division and its effects on the size, structure, and physicochemical properties of starch granules. In this study, we created mutants of plastid division-related gene MeMinD by CRISPR/Cas9 technology, leading to the disruption of normal division of amyloplasts in cassava storage roots.

Article Synopsis
  • Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) is an important tool for evaluating pancreatic lesions, but its accuracy is not very high, prompting the development of a convolutional neural network (CNN) to improve diagnosis of pancreatic cystic neoplasms (PCN) and pancreatic solid lesions (PSL).
  • The CNN was trained on a large dataset from four international centers, comprising over 126,000 images, and successfully distinguished between different types of pancreatic lesions with high accuracy.
  • The results showed the CNN achieved over 99% accuracy for normal pancreatic tissue and PCNs, while distinguishing between pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (P-DAC) and neuroendocrine tumors (P-NET) at 94% accuracy, pointing to the

The GenoPred pipeline: a comprehensive and scalable pipeline for polygenic scoring.

Motivation: Polygenic scoring is an approach for estimating an individual's likelihood of a given outcome. Polygenic scores are typically calculated from genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary statistics and individual-level genotype data for the target sample. Going from genotype to interpretable polygenic scores involves many steps and there are many methods available, limiting the accessibility of polygenic scores for research and clinical application.

Investigating the impact of socioeconomic status on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Amyotroph Lateral Scler Frontotemporal Degener

November 2024

Maurice Wohl Clinical Neuroscience Institute, Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, King's College London, London, UK.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by the gradual death of motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord, leading to fatal paralysis. Socioeconomic status (SES) is a measure of an individual's shared economic and social status, which has been shown to have an association with health outcomes. Understanding the impact of SES on health conditions is crucial, as it can influence and be influenced by health-related variables.

Department of Basic and Clinical Neuroscience, Maurice Wohl Clinical Neuroscience Institute, Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, King's College London, London, SE5 8AF, UK.

Objective: Neurofilament heavy-chain gene (NEFH) variants are associated with multiple neurodegenerative diseases, however, their relationship with ALS has not been robustly explored. Still, NEFH is commonly included in genetic screening panels worldwide. We therefore aimed to determine if NEFH variants modify ALS risk.
