Two sesquiterpenes, 8α-anisate-dauc-4-ene-3,9-dione (webiol anisate) (1) and 10α-acetoxy-6α-benzoate-jaeschkeanadiol (2) as well as, ten known analogues (3-10), and two sesquiterpene coumarins (11-12) were isolated from an organic root extract of (Fam. Apiaceae). Chemical structures were elucidated based on IR, 1D- and 2D-NMR and HRMS, spectroscopic analyses. With molecular overlap observed between two protease inhibitors that are being examined as anti-COVID-19 drugs, and sesquiterpenes isolated here, metabolite molecular docking calculations were made using the main protease (M), which is required for viral multiplication as well as RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp). binding-inhibition analysis predicted that select sesquiterpenes can bind to these enzymes required for viral replication. Structures of the isolated constituents were also consistent with the chemo-systematic grouping of secondary metabolites with other species.

Background: Current guidelines recommend empiric antibiotic therapy for patients who require hospitalization for community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). We sought to determine whether clinical, imaging or laboratory features in patients hospitalized for CAP in whom PCR is positive for a respiratory virus enable exclusion of bacterial coinfection so that antibiotics can be withheld.
Methods: For this prospective study, we selected patients in whom an etiologic diagnosis was likely to be reached, namely those who provided a high-quality sputum sample at or shortly after admission, and in whom PCR was done to test for a respiratory virus.

Retroviral gene transfer is the preferred method for stable, long-term integration of genetic material into cellular genomes, commonly used to generate chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T cells designed to target tumor antigens. Virus neutralization profiles against primary infection sera and corresponding antigenic cartography are integral part of the COVID-19 and influenza vaccine strain selection processes. Human single variant exposure sera have previously defined the antigenic relationships among SARS-CoV-2 variants but are now largely unavailable due to widespread population immunity. Therefore, antigenic characterization of future SARS-CoV-2 variants will require an animal model, analogous to using ferrets for influenza virus.
