Chronic mountain sickness (CMS) or Monge syndrome is a disease that is prevalent at altitude above 2 500 meters. High altitude polycythemia (HAPC) is one subtype of CMS. EPAS1 and EGNL1 are the most critical high-altitude adaptation genes in the genome of the Tibetan population.

Background And Objective: Ferroptosis, a form of programmed cell death driven by lipid peroxidation and dependent on iron ions, unfolds through a sophisticated interplay of multiple biological processes. These include perturbations in iron metabolism, lipid peroxidation, aberrant amino acid metabolism, disruptions in hypoxia-inducible factor-prolyl hydroxylase (HIF-PHD) axis, and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. Recent studies indicate that ferroptosis may serve as a promising therapeutic target for hypoxia-associated brain injury such as hypoxic-ischemic brain damage (HIBD) and cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury (CIRI).

Background: Despite its role in inflammation and the redox system under hypoxia, the effects and molecular mechanisms of hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) in neuroinflammation-associated depression are poorly explored. Furthermore, Prolyl hydroxylase domain-containing proteins (PHDs) regulate HIF-1; however, whether and how PHDs regulate depressive-like behaviors under Lipopolysaccharides (LPS)-induced stress conditions remain covered.

Methods: To highlight the roles and underlying mechanisms of PHDs-HIF-1 in depression, we employed behavioral, pharmacological, and biochemical analyses using the LPS-induced depression model.

Roxadustat, a HIF-PHD inhibitor with exploitable potential on diabetes-related complications.

Department of Pathophysiology, College of Basic Medical Science, China Medical University, Shenyang, Liaoning, China.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a group of metabolic diseases caused by absolute or relative deficiency of insulin secretion and characterized by chronic hyperglycemia. Its complications affect almost every tissue of the body, usually leading to blindness, renal failure, amputation, etc. and in the final stage, it mostly develops into cardiac failure, which is the main reason why diabetes mellitus manifests itself as a high clinical lethality.
