Aims/hypothesis: Diabetes is associated with epigenetic modifications including DNA methylation and miRNA changes. Diabetic complications in the cornea can cause persistent epithelial defects and impaired wound healing due to limbal epithelial stem cell (LESC) dysfunction. In this study, we aimed to uncover epigenetic alterations in diabetic vs non-diabetic human limbal epithelial cells (LEC) enriched in LESC and identify new diabetic markers that can be targeted for therapy to normalise corneal epithelial wound healing and stem cell expression.

The enormous, 2-3-million-year evolutionary expansion of hominin neocortices to the current enormity enabled humans to take over the planet. However, there appears to have been a glitch, and it occurred without a compensatory expansion of the entorhinal cortical (EC) gateway to the hippocampal memory-encoding system needed to manage the processing of the increasing volume of neocortical data converging on it. The resulting age-dependent connectopathic glitch was unnoticed by the early short-lived populations.

Calcification in photosynthetic scleractinian corals is a complicated process that involves many different biological, chemical, and physical sub-processes that happen within and around the coral tissue. Identifying and quantifying the role of separate processes in vivo or in vitro is difficult or not possible. A computational model can facilitate this research by simulating the sub-processes independently.

The lymphatic vascular function is regulated by pulsatile shear stresses through signaling mediated by intracellular calcium [Ca]. Further, the intracellular calcium dynamics mediates signaling between lymphatic endothelial cells (LECs) and muscle cells (LMCs), including the lymphatic tone and contractility. Although calcium signaling has been characterized on LEC monolayers under uniform or step changes in shear stress, these dynamics have not been revealed in LMCs under physiologically-relevant co-culture conditions with LECs or under pulsatile flow.
