Article Abstract

Given the significant impact of ions on environment pollution and human health, it is urgently needed to establish effective and convenient ion detection approaches, particularly in living cells. In this paper, we constructed multicolor N-doped-carbon dots (mPD-CDs) by facile one-step hydrothermal carbonization of m-phenylenediamine (mPD). mPD-CDs were successfully deployed for multicolor cellular imaging for animal cells, fungi, and bacteria in a wash-free way with high photostability and satisfactory biocompability. Moreover, mPD-CDs can be used as a fluorescent sensing probe for ultrasensitive detection of both iodide ion (I) and typical heavy metals such as cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), mercury (Hg), gadolinium (Gd), ferrous ion (Fe), Zinc (Zn), and ferric ion (Fe). This is the first report using CDs as optical sensing probe for the detection of Gd, and for detection of Fe with fluorescence "turn on". More significantly, with these versatile and fascinating properties, we applied mPD-CDs for intracellular ion detection in living cells like Hep G2 and S. cerevisiae, and zebra fish. Altogether, mPD-CDs displayed great potential for multicolor cell imaging and the multiple ion detection in vitro and in vivo, presenting a promising strategy for in-situ ultrasensitive sensing of multiple metal ions in the environment and the biological systems.

Background: The relationship between plasmatic fatty acid (FA) composition and liver fibrosis remains scarce in people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). We aimed to evaluate the association of plasmatic FAs and liver fibrosis in HIV mono-infected individuals.

Methods: This case-control study included PLWHA with liver fibrosis (cases) and randomly selected subjects without fibrosis (controls) from the PROSPEC-HIV study (NCT02542020).

Low intensity mechanical signals promote proliferation in a cell-specific manner: Tailoring a non-drug strategy to enhance biomanufacturing yields.

Mechanobiol Med

Biomanufacturing relies on living cells to produce biotechnology-based therapeutics, tissue engineering constructs, vaccines, and a vast range of agricultural and industrial products. With the escalating demand for these bio-based products, any process that could improve yields and shorten outcome timelines by accelerating cell proliferation would have a significant impact across the discipline. While these goals are primarily achieved using or strategies, harnessing cell mechanosensitivity represents a promising - albeit less studied - pathway to promote bioprocessing endpoints, yet identifying which mechanical parameters influence cell activities has remained elusive.

A century ago it was discovered that metabolic processes in living cells emit a spectrum of very low intensity radiation. This was based on observations that radiant energy from proliferating cells can amplify the rate of cell division in other nearby cellular life. Although metabolic radiation is now thoroughly documented in research on ultraweak photon emissions (UPE), the original finding that UPE can enhance mitogenesis remains controversial.

Inarguably, the green fluorescent protein (GFP) family is an exemplary model for protein engineering, accessing a range of unparalleled functions and utility in biology. The first variant to recognize and provide an optical output of chloride in living cells was serendipitously uncovered more than 25 years ago. Since then, researchers have actively expanded the potential of GFP indicators for chloride through site-directed and combinatorial site-saturation mutagenesis, along with chimeragenesis.
