This article reports the first fluorescent distance-based paper device coupled with an evaporating preconcentration system for determining trace mercury ions (Hg) in water. The fluorescent nitrogen-doped carbon dots (NCDs) were synthesized by a one-step microwave method using citric acid and ethylenediamine. The fluorescence turn-off of the NCDs in the presence of Hg was visualized with a common black light, and the distance of the quenched fluorescence correlated to Hg concentration. The optimal conditions for pH, NCD concentration, sample volume, and reaction time were investigated. Heating preconcentration was used to improve the detection limits of the fluorescent distance-based paper device by a factor of 100. Under the optimal conditions, the naked eye limit of detection (LOD) was 5 μg L Hg. This LOD is sufficient for monitoring drinking water where the maximum allowable mercury level is 6 μg L as established by the World Health Organization (WHO). The fluorescent distance-based paper device was successfully applied for Hg quantification in water samples without interference from other cations. The proposed method provides several advantages over atomic absorption spectroscopy including ease of use, inexpensive material and fabrication, and portability. In addition, the devices are simple to fabricate and have a long shelf-life (>5 months).

Dipicolinic acid (DPA) is a key biomarker of bacterial spores. In this study, we present a novel distance-based paper analytical device (d-PAD) for the fluorescence sensing of DPA. The detection mechanism relies on the complexation of ofloxacin (OFL) with Cu ions, where Cu quenches the fluorescence of OFL static quenching.

The colorimetric point-of-care test (POCT) offers a rapid and efficient method for detecting specific targets in real samples. However, traditional colorimetric methods often rely on complex signal amplification techniques or electronic devices to enhance detection sensitivity, which can inadvertently increase both cost and time, thus contradicting the fundamental goals of visual detection methods. Here, we presented a distance-based fluorescent immunosensor that utilized a gas-producing nanozyme for continuous gas production reaction as a signal.

Quantifying the formation and decomposition of amyloid is a crucial issue in the development of new drugs and therapies for treating amyloidosis. The current technologies for grasping amyloid formation and decomposition include fluorescence analysis using thioflavin-T, secondary structure analysis using circular dichroism, and image analysis using atomic force microscopy or transmission electron microscopy. These technologies typically require spectroscopic devices or expensive nanoscale imaging equipment and involve lengthy analysis, which limits the rapid screening of amyloid-degrading drugs.

This article introduces distance-based paper analytical devices (dPADs) integrated with molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) and carbon dots (CDs) for simultaneous quantification of cytokine biomarkers, namely C-reactive protein (CRP), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in human biological samples for diagnosis of cytokine syndrome. Using fluorescent CDs and MIP technology, the dPAD exhibits high selectivity and sensitivity. Detection is based on fluorescence quenching of CDs achieved through the interaction of the target analytes with the MIP layer on the paper substrate.
