Furans containing a β-ketoester group at 2-position undergo oxidative ring-opening by Mn(iii)/Co(ii) catalysts under an O atmosphere to produce 1,4-dicarbonyl moieties through an endoperoxide intermediate, which consecutively cyclized with the β-ketoester unit to afford 4-hydroxy-2-cyclohexen-1-ones. This oxidation/cyclization products were efficiently transformed into versatile benzofuran derivatives after consecutive aromatization and Paal-Knorr reaction.

The activation of alkyl hydroperoxides to generate radicals is a key step in the initiation of radical polymerisations in many industrial applications, not least protective coatings. Cobalt soaps (Co(ii) alkyl carboxylates) are highly effective catalysts under ambient conditions but viable alternatives based on less scarce catalysts are desirable, with especially iron and manganese catalysts showing potential. Manganese complexes of the ligand ,',″-trimethyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane (tmtacn) are long established as catalysts for organic oxidations with HO, however their reactivity with alkyl hydroperoxides is less studied especially in apolar solvents.

Overcoming the sluggish electrode kinetics of both oxygen reduction and evolution reactions (ORR/OER) with non-precious metal electrocatalysts will accelerate the development of rechargeable metal-air batteries and regenerative fuel cells. The authors investigated the electrochemical behavior and ORR/OER catalytic activity of core-porous shell Mn/Mn O nanoparticles in comparison with other manganese dioxides (β- and γ-MnO ), and benchmarked against Pt/C and Pt/C-IrO . Under reversible operation in O -saturated 5 M KOH at 22 °C, the early stage activity of core-shell Mn/Mn O shows two times higher ORR and OER current density compared to the other MnO structures at 0.

In this work, a novel material of Co Nanoparticles anchored on MnO nanorods wrapped in carbon layers (Co/MnO-X@C) is successfully synthesized and applied to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for Bisphenol A (BPA) degradation. More than 98% of BPA is removed by Co/MnO-0.32@C within 1 min.

Phenalenyl (PLY)-based metal complexes are a new addition to the metal complex family. Various applications of metal-based phenalenyl complexes (metal-PLY) have been reported, such as catalyst, quantum spin simulators, spin electronic devices, and molecular conductors, but the biological significance of metal-PLY (metal = Co(II), Mn(III), Ni(II), Fe(III), and Al(III)) systems has yet to be explored. In this study, the anticancer properties of such complexes were investigated in ovarian cancer cells (SKOV3 and HEY A8), and the cytotoxicity was comparable to that of other platinum-based drugs.
