Two novel {Dy}-based one dimensional chain compounds {[Dy(HL)(OAc)]·2MeOH} (1) and {[Dy(HL)(OAc)(NCS)]·2MeOH} (2) (HL = 1,3-bis(2-hydroxynaphthalenemethyleneamino)-propan-2-ol) have been prepared under solvothermal conditions. Crystal structure analyses indicate that 1 and 2 feature similar 1D chain structures bearing dinuclear secondary building units. The difference between these two structures is that one chelated acetate ligand of Dy(iii) ion in 1 is replaced by one monodentate coordinated NCS ion in 2, leading to their different coordination numbers and geometry configurations to Dy(iii) ion. Magnetic properties indicate that 1 and 2 display slow magnetic relaxation behavior with an effective energy barrier of 16.44(2) K in 1 and 8.02(2) K in 2, respectively, which is maybe attributed to the subtle crystal field perturbation of Dy(iii) ions.

Head and neck paragangliomas (HNPGLs) are typically slow-growing, hormonally inactive tumors of parasympathetic paraganglia. Inactivation of prolyl-hydroxylase domain-containing 2 protein causing indirect gain-of-function of hypoxia-inducible factor-2α (HIF-2α), encoded by EPAS1, was recently shown to cause carotid body hyperplasia. We previously described a syndrome with multiple sympathetic paragangliomas caused by direct gain-of-function variants in EPAS1 (Pacak-Zhuang syndrome, PZS) and developed a corresponding mouse model.

The synthesis and structural characterisation of [Ln(Tp)]I (1-Ln; Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd) (Tp = hydrotris(3-(2'-furyl)-pyrazol-1-yl)borate) have been reported as an isomorphous series adopting pseudo-icosahedral ligand field geometries. Continuous shape measurement (CShM) analyses on the crystal field environments of 1-Ln show the smallest values yet reported for complexes employing two hexadentate ligands (-scorpionate environments), with the smallest belonging to 1-La. Single-ion magnetism for 1-Ce, 1-Pr and 1-Nd was probed with ac magnetic susceptibility studies revealing slow magnetic relaxation for 1-Nd in applied magnetic fields and in zero-applied field for 1-Ce, which is a rare observation for Ce(III)-based single-ion magnets.

Rationale And Objectives: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common pathogenesis of dementia, and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is considered as the intermediate stage from normal elderly to AD. Early detection of MCI is an essential step for the timely intervention of AD to slow the progression of this disease. Different form previous studies in the whole-brain spontaneous activities, this research aimed to explore the low-frequency amplitude spectrum activities of patients with MCI within the default mode network (DMN), which has been involved in the process of maintaining normal cognitive function.

Optic nerve gliomas (ONG) are benign central nervous system tumours and the most common tumours of the optic nerve in children, often occurring before age 20. These tumours are slow-growing and can be treated with surgery and/or radiation therapy. Surgical resection is, however, associated with significant morbidity and loss of vision in the affected eye.

For trained individuals such as athletes and musicians, learning often plateaus after extensive training, known as the "ceiling effect." One bottleneck to overcome it is having no prior physical experience with the skill to be learned. Here, we challenge this issue by exposing expert pianists to fast and complex finger movements that cannot be performed voluntarily, using a hand exoskeleton robot that can move individual fingers quickly and independently.
