The method of using deuterium probes was proposed for studying the defect structure of oxide nanoparticles. It was based on the fact that in the course of annealing nanoparticles in deuterium, clusters consisting of point defects and deuterium atoms are formed. The content of the clusters depended on the type of defects. The concentration of deuterium and the content of the clusters were determined by the method of nuclear reactions. The technique was applied to study the defect structures of the nanoparticles of YSZ10, cubic zirconium dioxide doped with yttrium, and TiO. The nanopowders of YSZ10 and TiO were synthesized by means of the laser evaporation of the ceramic target; besides, TiO was obtained using the sol-gel method. It was shown that the method of the use of deuterium probes allowed one to reveal the presence of one or several types of point defects in nanoparticles and determine their concentration in the bulk and near the surface of nanoparticles with an accuracy of several percent and sensitivity of about 0.01 at%.

The reaction coefficient for hydrogen/deuterium (H/D) exchange and the diffusion of hydrated excess protons within amorphous solid water (ASW) are characterized as a function of temperature. For these experiments, water films are deposited on a Pt(111) substrate at 108 K, and reactions with pre-adsorbed hydrogen atoms produce hydrated protons. Upon heating, protons diffuse within the water, and H/D exchange occurs when they encounter D2O probe molecules deposited in the films.

Hydrogen-deuterium exchange (HDX) measured by small-angle neutron scattering (HDX-SANS) is used to measure HDX in bovine serum albumin (BSA) under different temperatures and formulation conditions. HDX-SANS measurements are performed at 40, 50, and 60 °C in DO after storing proteins at 4 °C for 1 week to pre-exchange the readily accessible hydrogens. This enables us to probe the long-time HDX of protons at the core of the BSA proteins, which is more challenging for solvent molecules to access.
