BWAVES is an acronym for Broadband Wide-Angle VElocity Selector spectrometer, indicating that a novel WAVES (Wide-Angle VElocity Selector) device will be used to select the velocity/wavelength of the detected neutrons after they are scattered by the sample. We describe a conceptual design of BWAVES, a time-of-flight broadband inverted-geometry neutron spectrometer for the Second Target Station at the Spallation Neutron Source operated by Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Being the first inverted geometry spectrometer where the energy of the detected neutrons can be chosen by a WAVES device mechanically, irrespective of the limitations imposed by the crystal analyzers or filters, BWAVES will feature a uniquely broad, continuous dynamic range of measurable energy transfers, spanning 4.5 decades. This will enable measurements of both vibrational and relaxational excitations within the same, continuous scattering spectra. Novel approaches that are necessary for the implementation of a WAVES device at the BWAVES spectrometer will result in a spectrometer with the design and characteristics much different from those displayed by the neutron spectrometers in existence today.

High-valent nickel species are implicated as intermediates in industrially relevant chemical transformations and in the catalytic cycles of metalloenzymes. Although a small number of tetravalent NiX complexes have been crystallographically characterized, higher nickel valence states have not been identified. Here we report a stable, crystalline NiX complex, Ni(BeCp) (; cyclopentadienyl anion (Cp)), formed by the insertion of zerovalent nickel into three Be-Be bonds.

We report the synthesis, characterization, and studies of novel 3-pyrrolyl BODIPY-based Schiff base products 3-6 and 3-pyrrolyl BODIPY-based benzo[]thiazol-2-yl derivatives 7-8. The Schiff base compounds 3-6 were synthesized condensation of α-formyl 3-pyrrolyl BODIPY with various amine derivatives, while the Knoevenagel condensation products 7-8 were obtained by reacting α-formyl 3-pyrrolyl BODIPY with 2-(benzo[]thiazol-2-yl) acetonitrile and bis(benzo[]thiazol-2-yl) methane, respectively. The compounds were thoroughly characterized by using HR-MS, 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy, and X-ray crystallography for two compounds.

The concept of non-trivial electronic structure combined with reduced dimensionality presents a promising strategy for advancing optical applications and energy harvesting technologies. Symmetry breaking in low dimensional system enables the emergence of non-linear optical responses, which are greatly amplified by the singular points of band inversion. Here, using first-principles calculations, the significant enhancement of the shift current in Bi nanotubes is investigated, driven by the combined effects of 1D geometry and non-trivial band order.

Background: The development of phantoms to reduce animal testing or to validate new instruments or operation techniques is of increasing importance. For this reason, a blood circulation phantom was developed to test a newly designed retractor system with an integrated oxygen sensor. This phantom was used to evaluate the impact of the 3D printed blood vessel on the measurement of the oxygen saturation.
