Asymmetrical directional couplers aided with subwavelength sidewall corrugations are used to realize ultra-compact silicon mode (de)multiplexers at C-band. Three mode (de)multiplexers with ultra-short coupling lengths of 5.6/6.5/7.7 m are designed to enable low-loss mode conversions between TE and TE modes. They are then cascaded to build a four-channel mode-division-multiplexing (MDM) link. The four mode channels present minimal on-chip insertion losses of 0.2/0.7/0.7/0.9 dB at their peak wavelengths. Measured cross talk levels of the four mode channels are better than -18.0/-19.1/-16.0/-18.2 dB within the wavelength range from 1530 nm to 1580 nm.

Single-molecule fluorescence spectroscopy offers unique capabilities for the low-concentration sensing and probing of molecular dynmics. However, employing such a methodology for versatile sensing and diagnostics under point-of-care demands device miniaturization to lab-on-a-chip size. In this study, we numerically design metalenses with high numerical aperture (NA = 1.

Sharp-bending waveguide is a key element for ultra-compact and densely integrated photonic devices, which is promising to enlarge the capability of modern information processing in a single chip. Topological photonics manifest the nature of robust propagation against sharp bending and such robustness has been experimentally demonstrated in topological integrated interfaces. It is important to quantify the bending loss of topological interface but has remained exclusive.

2D magnets have emerged as a class of materials highly promising for studies of quantum phenomena and applications in ultra-compact spintronics. Current research aims at design of 2D magnets with particular functional properties. A formidable challenge is to produce metallic monolayers: the material landscape of layered magnetic systems is strongly dominated by insulators; rare metallic magnets, such as FeGeTe, become insulating as they approach the monolayer limit.

Silicon-based optical switches are integral to on-chip optical interconnects, and mode-division multiplexing (MDM) technology has enabled modes to function as carriers in routing, further boosting optical switches' link capacity. However, traditional multimode optical switches, which typically use Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) structures and mode (de)multiplexers, are complex and occupy significant physical space. In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel demultiplexing-free dual-mode 3 × 3 thermal-optical switch based on micro-rings (MRs) and mode exchangers (MEs).

Mode division multiplexing (MDM) technology provides a pathway to enhance channel capacity beyond wavelength division multiplexing, positioning it as a pivotal advancement for next generation optical communications. Mode filters are essential for the low-loss transmission of specific modes and the reduction of modal crosstalk, thereby enhancing the feasibility of MDM systems. Although suppressing high-order mode is relatively straightforward, effectively blocking low-order modes poses a more intricate challenge.
