Water splitting is an important technology for alternative and sustainable energy storage, and a way for the production of hydrogen without generating pollution. In recent years, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have become the most capable multifunctional resources because of their high surface areas, tunable porosity, simple modification of compositions, and potential for use as precursors with a variety of morphological structures. Based on these qualities, many MOFs and their derived materials are utilized as electrocatalysts for the water splitting reaction. Herein, we assembled the relevant literature in recent years about MOF and MOF-derived materials for their eminent electrocatalytic activity in water splitting with useful strategies for the design and preparation of catalysts, along with challenges. This review summarizes the advancement in MOF materials, elucidating different strategies for its role in water splitting.

Hydrazine-assisted water splitting is a promising strategy for energy-efficient hydrogen production, yet challenges remain in developing effective catalysts that can concurrently catalyze both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and hydrazine oxidation reaction (HzOR) in acidic media. Herein, we report an effective bifunctional catalyst consisting of Rh clusters anchored on CoO branched nanosheets (Rh-CoO BNSs) synthesized an innovative arginine-induced strategy. The Rh-CoO BNSs exhibit unique Rh-O-Co interfacial sites that facilitate charge redistribution between Rh clusters and the CoO substrate, thereby optimizing their valence electronic structures.

The rapid flame annealing (FA) method has the advantages of convenience and rapidity with an instantaneous temperature rise and fall process. In this work, the influence of flame annealing duration on the front side and back side of CuBiO-based photocathodes was investigated, and photoelectrodes with variable compositions were obtained. A highly efficient CuO@CuO/CuBiO photoelectrode was successfully obtained via a two-step FA method within a few seconds.

This review summarizes the research advancements in the electrocatalytic reaction of metal nanoclusters for water splitting. It covers various types of nanoclusters, particularly those at the size level, that enhance these catalytic reactions.

The rational design of multicomponent heterostructure is an effective strategy to enhance the catalytic activity of electrocatalysts for water and seawater electrolysis in alkaline conditions. Herein, MOF-derived nitrogen-doped carbon/nickel-cobalt sulfides coupled vertically aligned Rhenium disulfide (ReS) on carbon cloth (NC-CoNiS@ReS/CC) are constructed via hydrothermal and activation approaches. Experimental and theoretical analysis demonstrates that the strong interactions between multiple interfaces promote electron redistribution and facilitate water dissociation, thereby optimizing *H adsorption energy for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER).
