Forensic laboratories are required to have analytical tools to confidently differentiate illegal substances such as marijuana from legal products (i.e., industrial hemp). The Achilles heel of industrial hemp is its association with marijuana. Industrial hemp from the L. plant is reported to be one of the strongest natural multipurpose fibers on earth. The plant is a vigorous annual crop broadly separated into two classes: industrial hemp and marijuana. Up until the eighteenth century, hemp was one of the major fibers in the United States. The decline of its cultivation and applications is largely due to burgeoning manufacture of synthetic fibers. Traditional composite materials such as concrete, fiberglass insulation, and lumber are environmentally unfavorable. Industrial hemp exhibits environmental sustainability, low maintenance, and high local and national economic impacts. The 2018 Farm Bill made way for the legalization of hemp by categorizing it as an ordinary agricultural commodity. Unlike marijuana, hemp contains less than 0.3% of the cannabinoid, Δ-tetrahydrocannabinol, the psychoactive compound which gives users psychotropic effects and confers illegality in some locations. On the other hand, industrial hemp contains cannabidiol found in the resinous flower of and is purported to have multiple advantageous uses. There is a paucity of investigations of the identity, microbial diversity, and biochemical characterizations of industrial hemp. This review provides background on important topics regarding hemp and the quantification of total tetrahydrocannabinol in hemp products. It will also serve as an overview of emergent microbiological studies regarding hemp inflorescences. Further, we examine challenges in using forensic analytical methodologies tasked to distinguish legal fiber-type material from illegal drug-types.

Predictors of Participation in Prenatal Substance Use Assessment, Counseling, and Treatment Among Pregnant Individuals in Prenatal Settings Who Use Cannabis.

J Addict Med

November 2024

From the, Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute, Seattle, WA (GTL); Department of Health Systems and Population Health, University of Washington, Seattle, WA (GTL); Division of Research, Kaiser Permanente Northern California, Oakland, CA (FWC, KCY-W, MBD, CIC); Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, University of California, San Francisco, CA (KCY-W, CIC); and Regional Offices, Kaiser Permanente Northern California, Oakland CA (DA, CC, AHA, AE).

Objectives: Assessment and counseling are recommended for individuals with prenatal cannabis use. We examined characteristics that predict prenatal substance use assessment and counseling among individuals who screened positive for prenatal cannabis use in prenatal settings.

Methods: Electronic health record data from Kaiser Permanente Northern California's Early Start perinatal substance use screening, assessment, and counseling program was used to identify individuals with ≥1 pregnancies positive for prenatal cannabis use.

Automated systems, regulated by algorithmic protocols and predefined set-points for feedback control, require the oversight and fine tuning of skilled technicians. This necessity is particularly pronounced in automated greenhouses, where optimal environmental conditions depend on the specialized knowledge of dedicated technicians, emphasizing the need for expert involvement during installation and maintenance. To address these challenges, this study proposes the integration of data acquisition technologies using Internet of Things (IoT) protocols and optimization services via reinforcement learning (RL) methodologies.

A Study on the Preparation and Performance of Ultrafine Powder Made of Industrial Hemp Degumming Residue.

Polymers (Basel)

December 2024

School of Textile Science and Engineering, Wuhan Textile University, No. 1 Sunshine Avenue, Jiangxia District, Wuhan 430200, China.

Industrial hemp, one of the most widely available and extensively produced varieties, generates a substantial amount of waste in the form of hemp cellulose. This study uses a recycling method combining crushing and acid treatment to convert leftover hemp fiber into ultrafine powder. A scanning electron microscope (SEM), an atomic force microscope (AFM), Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to examine the morphology of acid-treated hemp fiber heated to 200 °C and crushed into powder.

This study examines the enhancement of the mechanical strength of polymer resins through reinforcement with synthetic (glass) and natural (hemp, jute) fibers, using the TRIZ-ARIZ methodology to optimize composite design for improved mechanical properties, sustainability, and economic efficiency. Mechanical testing, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were conducted to evaluate the properties of the composite materials. Regarding tensile strength testing, the results showed the following: jute fiber achieved the best results, with a maximum tensile values of 43.

Research and Clinical Practice Involving the Use of Products, with Emphasis on Cannabidiol: A Narrative Review.

Pharmaceuticals (Basel)

December 2024

Department of Neuroscience and Behavior, Ribeirão Preto Medical School, University of São Paulo, Ribeirão Preto 14049-900, São Paulo, Brazil.

Background: Emerging evidence supports cannabidiol (CBD) as a promising therapeutic compound for various health conditions, despite its approval as a medication (product for medical purposes) remaining restricted to a limited range of clinical indications. Simultaneously, the regulation of cannabis-derived products for medicinal and recreational use has expanded their global market availability to meet local community demands. This scenario presents a complex challenge for clinicians, researchers, and industry, as the global appeal of therapeutic uses of CBD is growing more rapidly than the scientific evidence supporting its safety and effectiveness.
