AI Article Synopsis

  • A new nano-structured catalyst, CQDs-N(CHPOH), was created by combining carbon quantum dots with phosphorus acid through a refluxing process in ethanol.
  • The catalyst was extensively characterized using techniques like FT-IR, TEM, SEM, EDX, TG analysis, fluorescence, and XRD to analyze its structure and morphology.
  • It was applied successfully for synthesizing a specific compound (2-amino-6-(2-methyl-1-indol-3-yl)-4-phenyl-4-pyran-3,5-dicarbonitriles) via one-pot reactions involving aromatic aldehydes, indole derivatives, and malononitrile under reflux and ultrasound conditions.

Article Abstract

In this work, a new nano-structured catalyst with phosphorus acid moieties, synthesized by the reaction of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and phosphorus acid under refluxing EtOH. The structure and morphology of CQDs-N(CHPOH) were fully characterized using various techniques such as Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric (TG) analysis, fluorescence and X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. The new CQDs-N(CHPOH) catalyst was successfully used for the synthesis of 2-amino-6-(2-methyl-1-indol-3-yl)-4-phenyl-4-pyran-3,5-dicarbonitriles by the one-pot reaction of various aromatic aldehydes, 3-(1-indol-3-yl)-3-oxopropanenitrile derivatives and malononitrile in refluxing EtOH and/or ultrasonic irradiation conditions.

The development of straightforward synthetic methods for photoactive polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) that avoid Pd-catalyzed or radical-based processes remains a challenge. Such methods are essential to reducing the cost and environmental impact of organic photodevices. In this work, we present a one-pot synthetic approach for creating novel bipolar PAHs with extended π-conjugation, which are not accessible via conventional Pd-catalyzed routes.

Carbon dots (CDs) are promising candidates as oxygen photosensitizers, in cancer therapeutic applications due to their high quantum yield, superior chemical and photostability, low cytotoxicity and ease of chemical functionalization/tuning. Nitrogen doping can further improve oxygen photosensitization performance. Besides photodynamic therapy, however, the possibility to finely and remotely regulate the intracellular redox balance by using physical stimuli has been attracting more and more interest not only for nanotheranostic application, but also as a novel, fully biocompatible therapeutic tool.

Sub-cellular organelle anomalies are frequently observed in diseases such as cancer. Early and precise diagnosis of these alterations can be crucial for patient outcomes. However, current diagnostic tools using conventional organic dyes or metal quantum dots face limitations, including poor biocompatibility, stringent storage conditions, limited solubility in aqueous media, and slow staining speeds.

Carbonless DNA.

Phys Chem Chem Phys

January 2025

Faculty of Chemistry, University of Gdańsk, Wita Stwosza 63, 80-308 Gdańsk, Poland.

Carbonless DNA was designed by replacing all carbon atoms in the standard DNA building blocks with boron and nitrogen, ensuring isoelectronicity. Electronic structure quantum chemistry methods (DFT(ωB97XD)/aug-cc-pVDZ) were employed to study both the individual building blocks and the larger carbon-free DNA fragments. The reliability of the results was validated by comparing selected structures and binding energies using more accurate methods such as MP2, CCSD, and SAPT2+3(CCD)δ.
