Researchers in the field of photocatalysis are interested in finding a solution to the problem of charge transfer and recombination in photodegradation mechanisms. The ideal photoactive catalyst would be inexpensive, environmentally friendly, easily manufactured, and highly efficient. Graphitic carbon nitride (g-CN) and metal oxide (MOx) based nanocomposites (g-CN/MOx) are among the photocatalysts that provide the best results in terms of charge transfer capacity, redox capabilities, and charge recombination inhibition.

Institute of Catalysis, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, 1113 Sofia, Bulgaria.

Increased levels and detrimental effects of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) on air quality and human health have become an important issue in the environmental field. Benzene is classified as one of the most hazardous air pollutants among non-halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons with toxic, carcinogenic, and mutagenic effects. Various technologies have been applied to decrease harmful emissions from various sources such as petrochemistry, steel manufacturing, organic chemical, paint, adhesive, and pharmaceutical production, vehicle exhausts, etc.

Article Synopsis
  • Research on cobalt-functionalized covalent organic frameworks (COFs) as oxygen evolution electrocatalysts lacks focus on identifying true active species for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER).
  • The study reveals that cobalt oxide nanoparticles are created from Co(II) ions in the COF when in alkaline conditions, and these nanoparticles are the main active species for oxygen evolution.
  • The findings underscore the importance of understanding the relationship between COFs and metal centers during electrochemical processes to ensure effective catalyst performance and advancements in green hydrogen production technologies.

Waterborne infections caused by pathogenic microorganisms represent serious health risks for humans. Ternary zinc-tin oxide nanoparticles have great potential as a cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and efficient candidate for waterborne infections; however, their photocatalytic and antibacterial effects are quite limited due to insufficient visible light absorption and rapid electron-hole recombination. Herein, barium-doped zinc stannate (Ba@ZTO) nanoparticles were synthesized by the hydrothermal method and used for the first time not only as antibacterial agents to prevent the spread of the harmful bacteria and but also as photocatalysts to degrade the organic pollutant rhodamine B.
