We proposed an efficient method toward the synthesis of higher tungsten boride WB in the vacuumless direct current atmospheric arc discharge plasma. The crystal structure of the synthesized samples of boron-rich tungsten boride was determined using computational techniques, showing a two-phase system. The ab initio calculations of the energies of various structures with similar X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns allowed us to determine the composition of the formed higher tungsten boride. We determined the optimal parameters of synthesis to obtain samples with 61.5% WB by volume. The transmission electron microscopy measurements showed that 90% of the particles have sizes of up to 100 nm, whereas the rest of them may have sizes from 125 to 225 nm. Our study shows the possibility of using the proposed vacuumless method as an efficient and inexpensive way to synthesize superhard WB without employing resource-consuming vacuum techniques.

The coordination of the Lewis superacid tris(pentafluorophenyl)alane (AlCF) to phosphine-supported, group 6 bis(dinitrogen) complexes [ML(N)] is explored, with M = Cr, Mo or W and L = dppe (1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane), depe (1,2-bis(diethylphosphino)ethane), dmpe (1,2-bis(dimethylphosphino)ethane) or 2 × PMePh. Akin to tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane (BCF), AlCF can form 1 : 1 adducts by coordination to one distal nitrogen of general formula -[ML(N){(μ-η:η-N)Al(CF)}]. The boron and aluminium adducts are structurally similar, showing a comparable level of N push-pull activation.

Iron-based catalysts for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation hold considerable potential in water treatment. However, the slow conversion of Fe(III) to Fe(II) restricts its large-scale application. Herein, an iron phosphate tungsten boride composite (FePO/WB) was synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method to facilitate the Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox cycle and realize the efficient degradation of neonicotinoid insecticides (NEOs).

Most modern catalysts are based on precious metals and rear-earth elements, making some of organic synthesis reactions economically insolvent. Density functional theory calculations are used here to describe several differently oriented surfaces of the higher tungsten boride WB, together with their catalytic activity for the CO oxidation reaction. Based on our findings, WB appears to be an efficient alternative catalyst for CO oxidation.

This study designed a novel high-temperature corrosion-resistant alloy through thermodynamic equilibrium computations. The strength was determined by the integration of precipitation-strengthening species of nickel boride and tungsten solid solution strengthening, while high-temperature corrosion-resistant property was realized through optimized compositional design. Phase stability was enabled by the presence of a face-centered cubic structure.
