Published: April 2022

In this study, magnesium aluminate spinel (MgAlO) was synthesized by a self-propagating high-temperature synthesis method using Mg-Al alloy with a Mg/Al mass ratio of 50:50 as raw material. Synthesized MgAlO was characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, UV-vis diffused reflectance spectroscopy, photoluminescence, and thermogravimetric differential scanning calorimetry techniques. The results show that synthesized products are of high purity and excellent crystallinity. However, the particle size is not uniform and there is obvious agglomeration. The crystallite size of spinel phase is calculated to be 37.78 nm. In the UV band, the synthesized MgAlO has a certain absorption capacity, and the extrapolated band gap is 4.02 eV. The synthesis mechanism was studied, and continued rupture and growth of the oxidation layer is thought to be responsible for grain refinement.

Mechanochemical synthesis is an extremely useful strategy to reach thermoelectric materials due to its solvent-free one-step character, as the targeted thermoelectricity (TE) materials in a nanocrystalline format can be prepared by mere high-energy milling of elemental precursors. Nevertheless, the subsequent densification method (e.g.

Photocatalytic Desulfurization of Thiophene with Chevrel Phase NiMoS Synthesized by SHS.

ACS Omega

Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio 43210, United States.

The Chevrel phase compounds CuMoS, NiMoS, and FeMoS, synthesized by self-propagating high temperature synthesis, were evaluated as photocatalysts for visible light photocatalytic desulfurization. Investigations began with reflectance measurements from which absorbance spectra were calculated using the Kubelka-Munk transformation. The absorbance data was then used to create Tauc plots to find the direct and indirect bandgaps of the Chevrel phase compounds.

Composite plates comprising a blend of rare earth neodymium-(Nd) doped M-type barium ferrite (BaM) with CNTs (carbon nanotubes) and polyethylene WERE synthesized through a self-propagating reaction and hot-pressing treatment. The plates' microscopic characteristics were analyzed utilizing X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometry (FTIR), thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA), Raman, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analytical techniques. Their microwave absorption performance within the frequency range of 8.

Article Synopsis
  • - Porous NiTi alloys with 62% porosity were created using high-temperature synthesis, incorporating silver nanoparticles at 0.2% and 0.5% concentrations to enhance antibacterial properties.
  • - The alloy containing 0.5% silver demonstrated the strongest antibacterial effectiveness while maintaining good compatibility with cells, showing no toxicity to 3T3 embryonic fibroblast cells.
  • - Post-implantation clinical evaluations revealed no infections or complications in animals, indicating that the even distribution of silver nanoparticles contributes to a consistent antibacterial effect across the alloy.
