A study was made of the chronic effect of pesticides, within a wide range of doses, combined with whole-body gamma-irradiation, on the content of carbohydrate-containing proteins of rat liver. The extent to which disturbances in the carbohydrate-containing protein metabolism were manifest was shown to depend upon dose and time of action of the damaging factors. As determined by certain parameters, the combined effect of pesticides and gamma-radiation at the biochemical level was additive, and it was more than additive as estimated by a number of other tests.

Processed plant-based foods, particularly high carbohydrate-containing foods, are among the greatest contributors to dietary acrylamide, a probable human carcinogen, uptake. Between 2009 and 2020, five surveys were conducted to determine acrylamide in high carbohydrate-containing foods in Canada. These surveys included sampling of potato and sweet potato chips, French fries, and frozen potato/sweet potato products, as a follow-up to our earlier surveys from 2002 - 2008.

Outcomes in children hospitalised with severe acute malnutrition (SAM) remain poor. The current milk-based formulations focus on restoring weight-gain but fail to address modification of the integrity of the gut barrier and may exacerbate malabsorption owing to functional lactase, maltase and sucrase deficiency. We hypothesise that nutritional feeds should be designed to promote bacterial diversity and restore gastrointestinal (GI) barrier function.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety of drinking carbohydrate-containing fluids two hours prior to surgery in older adults using ultrasonography.
Methods: We conducted a nonrandomized and noninferiority comparative study in 60 patients aged over 65 yr who were scheduled for total knee arthroplasty. Patients who were fasted from midnight (fasting group) or who drank 400 mL of a carbohydrate-containing fluid (carbohydrate ingestion group) two hours prior to surgery were matched for age, sex, and body mass index.
