We compare three different methods to co-optimize hybrid optical/digital imaging systems with a commercial lens design software: conventional optimization based on spot diagram minimization, optimization of a surrogate criterion based on a priori equalization of modulation transfer functions (MTFs), and minimization of the mean square error (MSE) between the ideal sharp image and the image restored by a unique deconvolution filter. To implement the latter method, we integrate - for the first time to our knowledge - MSE optimization to the software Synopsys CodeV. Taking as an application example the design of a Cooke triplet having good image quality everywhere in the field of view (FoV), we show that it is possible, by leveraging deconvolution during the optimization process, to adapt the spatial distribution of imaging performance to a prescribed goal. We also demonstrate the superiority of MSE co-optimization over the other methods, both in terms of quantitative and visual image quality.

Fast Proxy Centers for the Jeffreys Centroid: The Jeffreys-Fisher-Rao Center and the Gauss-Bregman Inductive Center.

The symmetric Kullback-Leibler centroid, also called the Jeffreys centroid, of a set of mutually absolutely continuous probability distributions on a measure space provides a notion of centrality which has proven useful in many tasks, including information retrieval, information fusion, and clustering. However, the Jeffreys centroid is not available in closed form for sets of categorical or multivariate normal distributions, two widely used statistical models, and thus needs to be approximated numerically in practice. In this paper, we first propose the new Jeffreys-Fisher-Rao center defined as the Fisher-Rao midpoint of the sided Kullback-Leibler centroids as a plug-in replacement of the Jeffreys centroid.

Vertical Farming Systems (VFS) emerge as an approach to optimize plant growth in urban and controlled environments, by enabling sustainable and intensive production in reduced spaces. VFS allow for greater control over growing conditions, such as light, temperature and humidity, resulting in higher quality crops and with less use of resources, such as water and fertilizers. This research investigates the effects of different lighting regimes (Constant and Gaussian) and spectral qualities (white, RBW, blue and red) on the growth, photosynthesis, and biomass accumulation of lentil microgreens () in VFS.

Introduction: The maternal mortality crisis in the United States disproportionately affects women who are Black, especially those living in the Gulf South. These disparities result from a confluence of healthcare, policy, and social factors that systematically place Black women at greater risk of maternal morbidities and mortality. This study protocol describes the Southern Center for Maternal Health Equity (SCMHE), a research center funded by the National Institutes of Health in 2023 to reduce preventable causes of maternal morbidity and mortality while improving health equity.

While PTSD continues to be researched in great depth, less attention has been given to the continuum of traumatic responses that resides outside this diagnosis. This investigation begins with a literature review examining the spectrum of responses through the lens of the default mode network (DMN). To build upon this literature, a systematic exploratory study was incorporated, examining DMN-related neuropsychological functioning of 27 participants (16 trauma-exposed, and 11 non-trauma-exposed), with a subset (15 participants) completing neuroimaging.

A lensless compact arrangement based on digital in-line holography under Gabor's regime is proposed as a novel contactless method to assess the profile of multifocal intraocular lenses (MIOLs) which are conformed by several diffractive rings. Diffractive MIOLs are a widely adopted ophthalmologic option for the correction of presbyopia in patients undergoing cataract surgery. The MIOL optical design might introduce non-negligible optical performance differences between lenses as well as the introduction of undesirable photic phenomena (such as halos and glare) affecting the vision of users.
