Reward of tactile genital stimulation is sexually equivalent, but mechanistically differentiated in mice.

December 2024

Department of Psychology, University of Toronto Mississauga, Canada; Department of Cell and Systems Biology, University of Toronto, Canada. Electronic address:

Gonadal steroid hormones are thought to activate sexual behavior by actions on multiple organ systems, including the nervous system and genitalia. We previously characterized ovarian hormone dependent behavioral and neural responses to clitoral stimulation in female mice. Here we investigate whether sex differences exist in the responses to tactile genital stimulation, and whether these might depend on gonadal androgens.

Sexual selection is often studied with a focus on female mate choice, wherein females evaluate male signals to select an optimal mate. However, in some systems, males should also make careful decisions about the females they choose to court, particularly when faced with the risk of precopulatory sexual cannibalism. Here, we explore the idea that male jumping spiders () may mitigate this risk by responding to female cues probably associated with female aggression and/or receptivity.

Osmophore Structure and Labellum Micromorphology in (Orchidaceae): New Interpretations of Floral Features and Implications for a Specific Sexually Deceptive Pollination Interaction.

Plants (Basel)

May 2024

Centro de Estudos do Ambiente e do Mar (CESAM Lisboa), Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa (FCUL), C2, Campo Grande, 1749-016 Lisboa, Portugal.

Pollination by sexual deception specifically attracts male insects, through the floral scent and particular morphological features of the flower that serve as visual and tactile stimuli. The unique bond between the orchid and the male wasp primarily stems from a few distinctive semiochemicals that mimic the female wasp's sex pheromone, although the floral scent comprises a variety of compounds. An osmophore producing highly volatile compounds has been documented in four close relatives of and is now being also investigated in this species.
