Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

Amsterdam Neuroscience, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Amsterdam UMC, Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Background: The first disease-modifying treatments (DMTs) for Alzheimer's disease (AD) have been approved in the USA, marking profound changes in AD-diagnosis and treatment. This will bring new challenges in terms of clinician-patient communication. We aimed to collect the perspectives of memory clinic professionals regarding the most important topics to address and what (tools) would support professionals and their patients and care partners to engage in a meaningful conversation on whether (or not) to initiate treatment.

Background: The scarcity of resources and caregiving services, a higher prevalence of health conditions, and financial concerns in rural areas in the United States have been well-documented. However, less research has compared experiences between caregivers of people with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) in rural versus urban areas. This study sought to address this gap by identifying those unmet service needs, explore factors associated with service use, and propose tailored strategies for better serving the needs of both rural and urban caregivers.

Introduction: The announcement of an Alzheimer's disease (AD) diagnosis is a complex process that requires careful consideration by healthcare professionals. This study aims to explore the desires of patients regarding the disclosure of their Alzheimer's diagnosis and to understand the practices adopted by physicians in this regard.

Methods: Within the context of memory disorders consultations, patients were queried about their preferences regarding the disclosure of an AD diagnosis if it were determined to be the cause of their memory issues.

Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, CT, USA.

Objectives: Little data exists to date regarding effective interventions to improve emergency department (ED)-to-community care transitions for persons living with cognitive impairment (PLWCI) and their care partners. We sought to develop, refine, and pilot test the innovative pairing of artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled digital advisors and an occupational therapist-led care coach intervention to improve ED-to-community care transitions for PLWCI and their care partners.

Methods: We used a mixed methods, multi-phased approach to develop the intervention, with PLWCI and care partners sampled from the LiveWell Dementia Specialists network.

Introduction: Patient-reported outcomes are increasingly being utilized in clinical settings to identify psychological symptoms and track fluctuations over time. Some clinicians and researchers have expressed concerns about the validity of symptom questionnaires cognitively impaired populations. We sought to determine if differential item functioning (DIF) is present based on cognitive impairment using the patient reported outcomes measurement information system (PROMIS) inventories of anxiety and depression.
