Air pollution is among the top risk faced by people around the world, and therefore combating it is among the top priorities. It begins with identifying the sources that contribute the most to local air pollution to prioritize their control. There are advanced methods for source identification and apportionment, but such methods are not available in many low-income countries and not everywhere in all high-income countries. We propose a simplified method by using source the signatures to help obtain information about the local source contribution if no other methods are available. Using low-cost monitors, particle mass (PM) and carbon monoxide (CO) concentrations were measured and the ratio of CO/PM was determined. We investigated outdoor and indoor sources, including vehicular exhaust, combustion of biomass, incense and mosquito coil burning, and cigarette smoking. The results show that the ratios differed significantly between certain pollutant sources. Compressed natural gas (CNG) engines have a high ratio (mean value of 972 ± 419), which is attributed to relatively low PM emissions, while ship emissions and cigarette smoke recorded a relatively low ratio. Most traffic emissions recorded higher ratios than those of bushfire emissions, and ratios of most outdoor pollutant sources were much higher than those of indoor pollutant sources. There is a clear trend for ratios to decrease from high to low for CNG, petrol, diesel for buses, and fuel for ships. Our results suggest that the ratio of CO/PM can be used as an effective method to identify pollution sources.

The unintended microbiological production of hydrogen sulphide (HS) poses a significant challenge in engineered systems, including sewage treatment plants, landfills and aquaculture systems. Although sulphur-rich amino acids and other substrates conducive to non-sulphate-based HS production are frequently present, the capacity and potential of various microorganisms to perform sulphate-free HS production remain unclear. In this study, we identify the identity, activity and genomic characteristics of bacteria that degrade cysteine to produce HS in anaerobic enrichment bioreactors seeded with material from aquaculture systems.

This study integrated data-driven interpretable machine learning (ML) with statistical methods, complemented by knowledge-driven discrimination diagrams, to identify the primary driving factors of heavy metal (HM) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) contamination in agricultural soils influenced by complex sources in a rapidly industrializing region of a megacity in southern China. First, the statistical characteristics of the concentrations of HMs and PAHs, and their correlations with the environmental covariates were explored. Three ML models and a statistical model comprising multiple environmental variable predictors were developed and assessed to predict the concentration of HMs in the agricultural soil.

Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) is one of the most investigated Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) for being the strongest compound to eliminate and having adverse health concerns. In this work, we have conducted the sonochemical treatment of PFOS simulated water under high (500 kHz) and low (22 kHz) frequencies while monitoring the operational parameters via an integrated sonochemical system. The integrated advanced sonochemical system includes software to monitor treatment power, solution temperature and frequency while allowing distinctive control of the reaction conditions.

p-Phenylenediamine (PPD) antioxidants and their quinone derivatives (PPDQs), as hot-spot novel contaminants in recent years, have been detected in air fine particulate matters (PM) in multiple regions. However, current research all discussed the pollution of PPDs and PPDQs based on the collected PM samples at least in one day (23.5 h).

The Pearl River Estuary (PRE) has experienced an influx of metals and nutrients, predominantly from the Pearl River, which has led to a potential threat to the estuarine ecosystem. In this study, sediment samples were densely collected to clarify the accumulation, and source contributions of heavy metals (namely Hg, Zn, Cu, As, Pb, Cd, and Cr) in the PRE. The spatial distributions of these metals exhibited significant differences, with higher values detected in the offshore areas and lower values further away.
