Multizone sound field reproduction aims to generate personal sound zones in a shared space with multiple loudspeakers. Traditional multizone sound field reproduction methods have focused on optimizing the source strengths given a preset array configuration. Recently, however, various methods have explored optimization of the loudspeaker locations. These can be categorized into sparse regularization and iterative methods with existing studies based on numerical simulations and mostly aiming at single-zone sound field reproduction. In this paper, unique experiments compare the state-of-the-art loudspeaker placement optimization methods by selecting a smaller number of loudspeakers from the candidates uniformly placed along a circle. An evolutionary array optimization scheme is proposed and shown to outperform the best existing methods in terms of mean square error in the bright zone and acoustic contrast between the bright and dark zones at frequencies below 1 kHz. The proposed evolutionary optimization scheme is simple, flexible, and can be extended to broadband optimization and other cost functions.

SiN ceramic has received great attention because of its sound biological performances, which make it an attractive ceramic implant material in healthcare, particularly in orthopedic surgery. With the advancement of 3D printing technology, SiN ceramics can now be fabricated into customized implants with precise anatomical shapes, sizes, and microstructures, catering to the individual needs of patients. We, therefore, conducted a comprehensive review of how 3D printing enables complex-shaped SiN ceramic implants for clinical applications.

The utilization of acoustic fields offers a contactless approach for microparticle manipulation in a miniaturized system, and plays a significant role in medicine, biology, chemistry, and engineering. Due to the acoustic radiation force arising from the scattering of the acoustic waves, small particles in the Rayleigh scattering range can be trapped, whilst their impact on the acoustic field is negligible. Manipulating larger particles in the Mie scattering regime is challenging due to the diverse scattering modes, which impacts the local acoustic field.

Purpose: The aim of the current study is to examine if the relationship among three semivowel sounds (/l, ɹ, w/) and between the semivowel and the following vowel differs by children's overall speech proficiency, and if this relationship affects listeners' perceptual judgment of the liquid sounds (/l, ɹ/). The acoustic proximity among the three semivowel sounds and the acoustic characteristics of the following vowel sounds were examined by each child speaker's overall speech sound proficiency and their semivowel accuracy.
Methods: A total of 21 monolingual English-speaking children with and without speech sound disorders produced monosyllabic words that include target semivowel sounds in word-initial position in different vowel contexts.

The barn owl is a common research subject in auditory science due to its exceptional capacity for high frequency hearing and superb sound source localization capabilities. Despite longstanding interest in the auditory performance of barn owls, the function of its middle ear has attracted remarkably little attention. Here, we report the middle ear transfer function measured by laser Doppler vibrometry and direct measurements of inner ear pressures.

A comprehensive analysis of everyday sound perception can be achieved using Electroencephalography (EEG) with the concurrent acquisition of information about the environment. While extensive research has been dedicated to speech perception, the complexities of auditory perception within everyday environments, specifically the types of information and the key features to extract, remain less explored. Our study aims to systematically investigate the relevance of different feature categories: discrete sound-identity markers, general cognitive state information, and acoustic representations, including discrete sound onset, the envelope, and mel-spectrogram.
