Objectives: Interferon regulatory factor 8 (IRF8) is a new biomarker shown to be positive in monocytic leukemias as well as in B cells. As a transcription factor, it plays a critical role in pre-B-cell differentiation and induction of tolerance pathways, among other functions. Given the frequent diagnostic dilemma in CD30-positive large cell lymphomas that could resemble both Hodgkin lymphoma and anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL), we sought to determine whether IRF8 can be useful in distinguishing between these neoplasms that require different treatment strategies.

Methods: In this retrospective study, 74 cases of classic Hodgkin lymphoma (CHL) and 7 cases of nodular lymphocyte-predominant Hodgkin lymphoma (NLPHL) on a tissue microarray (TMA), as well as 15 individual cases of ALK-negative ALCL and 4 cases of ALK-positive ALCL, were stained for IRF8. Paired box 5 (PAX5) immunostaining of the TMA was also performed and compared alongside since that marker is occasionally the only marker to help clinically differentiate between T- and B-cell lymphomas with anaplastic/Hodgkin-like cytology.

Results: None (0%) of the ALCLs were positive for IRF8 while all (100%) of the NLPHLs and 85% of the CHLs were positive for IRF8. Six (8%) cases of CHL were PAX5 negative but IRF8 positive. Conversely, seven (10%) cases of CHL were PAX5 positive but IRF8 negative. Four (6%) cases of CHL were negative for both PAX5 and IRF8.

Conclusions: There is significant morphologic and immunophenotypic (CD30 positive and CD45 and CD20 negative) overlap between CHL and ALCL. Since many ALCLs show downregulation of lineage-specific T-cell markers or are "null cell" type, only PAX5 has been a reliable marker to differentiate between borderline cases. This is further confounded by positivity of PAX5 in some ALCLs due to amplification of PAX5. On the basis of recent discoveries of IRF8 function as well as performance as an immunostain, we tested this marker in human lymphoma samples and found that it aids in the discrimination between these tumors.

Carbazole-derived self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) are promising materials for hole-extraction layer (HEL) in conventional organic photovoltaics (OPVs). Here, a SAM Cbz-2Ph derived from 3,6-diphenylcarbazole is demonstrated. The large molecular dipole moment of Cbz-2Ph allows the modulation of electrode work function to facilitate hole extraction and maximize photovoltage, thus improving the OPV performance.

Background: Distinctive heterogeneity characterizes diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), one of the most frequent types of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Mitochondria have been demonstrated to be closely involved in tumorigenesis and progression, particularly in DLBCL.

Objective: The purposes of this study were to identify the prognostic mitochondria-related genes (MRGs) in DLBCL, and to develop a risk model based on MRGs and machine learning algorithms.

Enhancing Flexible Perovskite Photovoltaic Cells and Modules Through Light-Trapping and Light-Shifting Strategies.

Flexible perovskite photovoltaic devices are typically constructed on flexible polyethylene naphthalate (PEN) substrates, which exhibit near-ultraviolet absorption and high visible-light reflection, leading to significant optical losses. To address this issue, a reusable optical-management sticker tailored for flexible substrates has been proposed in this work. The sticker incorporates a light-shifting material that converts near-ultraviolet light into visible light, enabling photoelectric conversion of near-ultraviolet light.

Droplet-Based EPR Spectroscopy for Real-Time Monitoring of Liquid-Phase Catalytic Reactions.

In situ monitoring is essential for catalytic process design, offering real-time insights into active structures and reactive intermediates. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy excels at probing geometric and electronic properties of paramagnetic species during reactions. Yet, state-of-the-art liquid-phase EPR methods, like flat cells, require custom resonators, consume large amounts of reagents, and are unsuited for tracking initial kinetics or use with solid catalysts.

A calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC) is a cystic lesion originating from odontogenic epithelium, exhibiting ameloblastomatous features and containing focal accumulations of ghost cells. The standard treatment for COC typically involves enucleation followed by surgical curettage. However, if the cyst is large or closely associated with anatomical structures, decompression may be considered as a preliminary step before enucleation.
