We experimentally investigate the Edwards volume ensemble in cyclically sheared bidisperse disks of two friction coefficients ( ≈ 0.3 and → ∞) subjected to a range of shear amplitudes . Despite the local and global anisotropy, hysteresis, and the potential long-range correlation of the free volume, the Edwards volume ensemble surprisingly provides an excellent statistical description of disk packings in cyclically sheared systems. Our finding can be better understood from the comprehensive analysis of the geometric and statistical properties of Voronoi cells of individual particles. First, the average degrees of anisotropy of Voronoi cells are weak at both the microscopic and macroscopic scales within a range of shear amplitudes of up to = 12% regardless of the inter-particle friction coefficients even though the azimuthal distributions of the Voronoi cell depend on . Second, there is only negligible hysteresis of global compactivity and volume fluctuations. Finally, the spatial correlations of the free volume and the orientation are weakly anisotropic and short ranged for practical purposes. Both results are independent of . Interestingly, our free-volume statistical results are consistent with the simple physical picture that the free volume is directly proportional to the compactivity.

Comparative analysis of left atrial size and appendage morphology in paroxysmal and persistent atrial fibrillation patients.

J Arrhythm

February 2025

Heart Center Munich-Bogenhausen, Department of Cardiology and Internal Intensive Care Medicine Munich Hospital Bogenhausen, Munich Municipal Hospital Group Munich Germany.

Purpose: Pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) is effective in treating atrial fibrillation (AF), but outcomes are worse for persistent AF (persAF) patients than paroxysmal AF (PAF) patients. The study aimed to identify differences in left atrial (LA) and left atrial appendage (LAA) anatomy in different AF types.

Methods: In a single-center observational study, a blinded retrospective analysis of preprocedural cardiac computed tomography angiography (CCTA) images was performed.

Liposomal Formulation of Hydroxychloroquine Can Inhibit Autophagy In Vivo.

Preclinical studies have shown that the anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) improves the anti-cancer effects of various therapeutic agents by impairing autophagy. These findings are difficult to translate in vivo as reaching an effective HCQ concentration at the tumor site for extended times is challenging. Previously, we found that free HCQ in combination with gefitinib (Iressa, ZD1839) significantly reduced tumor volume in immunocompromised mice bearing gefitinib-resistant JIMT-1 breast cancer xenografts.

A Framework for Comprehensive Dairy Calf Health Investigations.

Animals (Basel)

January 2025

Department of Population Medicine, University of Guelph, Guelph, ON N1G 2W1, Canada.

The objective of this narrative review is to provide a systematic framework for veterinarians to investigate dairy calf health, focusing on critical control points and key performance indicators (KPIs) to address morbidity and mortality challenges in preweaned calves. Recommendations target prenatal maternal nutrition, heat stress abatement, and optimal calving management to minimize risks associated with perinatal mortality and preweaning morbidity. Further, comprehensive colostrum management is discussed to ensure excellent transfer of passive immunity, which includes prompt collection and feeding within two hours of birth at a volume of 8.

: Diffuse myocardial fibrosis and altered deformation are relevant prognostic factors in aortic stenosis (AS) patients. The aim of this exploratory study was to investigate the relationship between myocardial strain, and myocardial extracellular volume (ECV) in patients with severe AS with a photon-counting detector (PCD)-CT. : We retrospectively included 77 patients with severe AS undergoing PCD-CT imaging for transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) planning between January 2022 and May 2024 with a protocol including a non-contrast cardiac scan, an ECG-gated helical coronary CT angiography (CCTA), and a cardiac late enhancement scan.

Introduction: With the increasing use of aeromedical transport for critically ill patients, it is essential to understand the impact of pressure changes on drug infusion delivery systems. As airplanes ascend and descend, gases/bubbles are released from solutions when ambient pressure decreases and dissolves when pressure increases. This may affect mechanical fluid delivery systems and cause clinically significant changes, especially within a critical care setting.
