Published: April 2022

Purpose: Ophthalmic endoscopy is useful in vitreoretinal surgery with opaque anterior segments or anatomically challenging structures. However, standard ophthalmic endoscopy devices are usually large and costly. Thus, the development of a portable endoscope is necessary.

Methods: The portable endoscope consisted of a probe, an illumination system, a high-resolution camera module, and a universal serial bus (USB). It was connected to a laptop and applied for intraocular imaging of porcine eyes in vitro. Basic parameters and pictures of the same tissue target were compared with those of the standard Endo Optiks E4 system.

Results: The retinal images were displayed on the laptop screen, which clearly showed the overall appearance of the central and peripheral retina, and the details of the retinal vasculature and ciliary body. Compared with a standard endoscope, our portable endoscope is smaller and more affordable. It can be taken anywhere for intraocular imaging and vitreoretinal surgery.

Conclusion: A laptop-based portable endoscope is a promising device in vitreoretinal surgery. It provides high-resolution images of intraocular tissues that should make a noticeable difference in intraocular surgery with disordered anterior segments. With its portability and high-resolution imaging, it may promote the application of endoscopes in ophthalmology.

This retrospective study aimed to compare the efficacy of portable ear endoscopic tympanic injection versus conventional ear endoscopic tympanic injection in the treatment of idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL) and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of each method. Clinical data of 128 patients with ISSNHL who did not respond to conventional treatment were collected from January 2019 to June 2023. Patients were divided into 2 groups: Group 1 (n = 60) received portable ear endoscopic tympanic injection, while Group 2 (n = 68) received conventional ear endoscopic tympanic injection.

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) training remains challenging. This study used 3D printing techniques to develop and optimize a portable ERCP training simulator and to implement basic and advanced practical techniques. Subsequently, we aimed to determine whether endoscopy trainees acquired proficiency in ERCP techniques and assess any improvements in their skill levels from using this model.

Radiation therapy (RT) is widely used for cancer treatment but is found with side effects of radiation dermatitis and fibrosis thereby calling for timely assessment. Nevertheless, current clinical assessment methods are found to be subjective, prone to bias, and accompanied by variability. There is, therefore, an unmet clinical need to explore a new assessment technique, ideally portable and affordable, making it accessible to less developed regions too.

Objectives: Thalamic hematoma patients present with diverse clinical conditions, and treatment approaches vary widely. Currently, the use of disposable portable endoscope surgery has been rapidly adopted in many hospitals, but outcomes can vary significantly. Surgical approaches and techniques for thalamic hematoma often reference those used for basal ganglia hemorrhage, but their effectiveness remains uncertain.

Background: Wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE) has become an important noninvasive and portable tool for diagnosing digestive tract diseases and has been propelled by advancements in medical imaging technology. However, the complexity of the digestive tract structure, and the diversity of lesion types, results in different sites and types of lesions distinctly appearing in the images, posing a challenge for the accurate identification of digestive tract diseases.

Aim: To propose a deep learning-based lesion detection model to automatically identify and accurately label digestive tract lesions, thereby improving the diagnostic efficiency of doctors, and creating significant clinical application value.
