is a novel perennial crop being developed for oilseed and biofuel in the midwestern US. One of the primary pests in this system is (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae). Little is known about the chemical ecology or flight behavior of , but many semiochemicals have been identified from other closely related species. Some of these compounds include: ()- and ()-8-dodecenyl acetate, ()-9-dodecenyl acetate, ()-8-dodecenol, (,)-8,10-dodecadienyl acetate, and (,)-9,12-tetradecadienyl acetate. The goals of this study were to evaluate whether any of these compounds could improve capture of on clear sticky cards in the field, and the most attractive volatiles might affect flight behavior on a computer-automated flight mill assay. We found that there was significant attraction to ()-8-dodecenyl acetate in two years in the field, which may possibly be a component in the pheromone blend for . On flight mills, flew an average of 23 km in a 24 h period. The presence of attractive stimuli (e.g., ()-8-dodecenyl acetate) had arresting properties and decreasing flight distance on the mill by 78 to 80%. The longest flight distances were registered in the morning (4:00-12:00) and were 1.8-fold greater than flight distances and durations at night (20:00-4:00). ()-8-dodecenyl acetate may be useful in behaviorally based monitoring and management strategies for . Overall, our research expands the knowledge on the chemical ecology of adult .

The macadamia nut borer, Gymnandrosoma aurantianum Lima (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), is the main pest of Macadamia integrifolia Maiden & Betche (Proteales: Proteaceae) in Central America. Despite its importance, there is little information on its reproductive behavior. We studied the calling behavior and effect of age on female sex pheromone production and male antennal response to the pheromone.

Reverse chemical ecology guides the screening for Grapholita molesta pheromone synergists.

Background: Pheromone-based management is a leading nonpesticidal strategy among integrated pest management options. Improving the potency of pheromone products by adding synergists would be a practical way to popularize pheromone-based management as well as to reduce pesticide use.

Results: Using reverse chemical ecology, synergists for Grapholita molesta sex pheromone were screened.

Functional analysis of the odorant receptor coreceptor in odor detection in Grapholita molesta (lepidoptera: Tortricidae).

Key Laboratory of Plant Protection Resources & Pest Management of the Ministry of Education, College of Plant Protection, Northwest A&F University, Yangling, Shaanxi, China.

The olfactory system must detect and discriminate various semiochemicals in the environment. In response to such diversity, insects have evolved a family of odorant-gated ion channels composed of a common receptor (coreceptor, Orco) and a ligand-binding tuning odorant receptor (OR) that confers odour specificity. This study aims to examine the expression pattern of Orco gene of Grapholita molesta (GmolOrco) and to elucidate the role of GmolOrco in detecting G.

Odorant degrading carboxylesterases (CXEs) play key roles in the process of odor signal reception via degrading ester odorants. But the functional mechanisms of CXEs in modulating insect behaviors are unclear. Herein, we studied the roles that CXEs played in mating, foraging, and signal receptions of sex pheromones and host volatiles in Grapholita molesta.
