Promoting neurogenesis is a promising strategy to treat neurodegenerative disorders. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the effect of mastic gum resin from the var. Chia (Anacardiaceae family) in proliferation capacity and differentiation of embryonic mesenchymal stem cells into a neural lineage. For this purpose, mastic gum was applied as a neural inducer for stem cell differentiation into the neuronal lineage. Following treatment of embryonic stem cells (ESCs) with mastic gum, verification differentiation of the ESCs into the neuronal lineage, gene expression analysis, and immunocytochemistry staining approach were performed. Gene expression analysis demonstrated that mastic gum increased the expression level of neuron markers in the ESCs-derived neuron-like cells. Moreover, our immunocytochemistry staining results of two important neural stem cell markers, including Nestin and microtubule-associated protein-2 (Map2) expression confirmed that mastic gum has the potential to promote neuronal differentiation in ESCs. In summary, the use of mastic gum to stimulate the differentiation of ESCs into a neural lineage can be considered as a good candidate in stem cell therapy.

Masterpenoids A-D, Four Unprecedented Nortriterpenoids from the Mastic () and Their Anti-inflammatory Activity.

J Org Chem

December 2024

Key Lab of Natural Product Chemistry and Application at Universities of Education Department of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Yili Normal University, Yining 835000, China.

Four unprecedented nortriterpenoids, masterpenoids A-D, were isolated and fully elucidated from the resin of the mastic tree (). Masterpenoids A-C are the first norterpenoids featuring an unprecedented 6/6/6/10 ring system, while masterpenoid D possesses a novel 6/6/6/7/5 ring system. The anti-inflammatory potential of the compounds was meticulously assessed through the establishment of an in vitro model of lipopolysaccharide-induced inflammation in RAW264.

Background: Central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI) increase morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. Central venous access device (CVAD) dressing integrity is critical to prevent CLABSI. From the First Quarter to the Third Quarter of 2023, CLABSI rates related to disruption in CVAD dressing integrity increased significantly at our facility.

Article Synopsis
  • - Dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) are easy to collect and have a higher growth rate than bone marrow stem cells, making them useful for regenerating teeth and nerves.
  • - Chios gum mastic (CGM) is a natural resin that can enhance the growth and differentiation of human DPSCs by promoting key proteins involved in the cell cycle and odontogenic processes.
  • - The study found that CGM treatment led to increased cell proliferation, activated important differentiation markers, and improved the mineralization process in DPSCs, highlighting its potential for tissue engineering applications.
