View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe objectives were to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of a single preoperative dose of intravenous tranexamic acid (TXA) in reducing perioperative blood loss and requirement for transfusion in patients undergoing hip hemiarthroplasty for femoral neck fracture. A double-blind randomized controlled trial was conducted in 140 patients with hip fracture. After randomization, 68 patients received a single dose of 1 gr of intravenous TXA at the start of the surgery (TXA group), and 72 received a placebo treatment (placebo group).

Adeno-associated viral (AAV) vectors are increasingly used for preclinical and clinical cardiac gene therapy approaches. However, gene transfer to cardiomyocytes poses a challenge due to differences between AAV serotypes in terms of expression efficiency and . For example, AAV9 vectors work well in rodent heart muscle cells but not in cultivated neonatal rat ventricular cardiomyocytes (NRVCMs), necessitating the use of AAV6 vectors for studies.

Wernicke's Encephalopathy (WE) is a rare but severe condition primarily caused by thiamine deficiency, often seen in pregnant women who experience severe vomiting, such as in hyperemesis gravidarum. This case report details a 38-year-old woman at 27 weeks of gestation who developed altered consciousness, cerebellar ataxia, and hyperlactatemia following persistent vomiting. Brain MRI demonstrated characteristic bilateral abnormalities consistent with WE.

Background: The role of oral switch antibiotic therapy in uncomplicated bloodstream infection (BSI) remains unclear. This retrospective cohort study examines the effectiveness of oral switch compared with standard intravenous antibiotic therapy in uncomplicated BSI.
Methods: Adults with first episodes of uncomplicated monomicrobial BSI were admitted to 10 Prisma Health hospitals in South Carolina from January 2021 to June 2023 were included.
