In this paper, we investigate the effects of margin purchases and short sales on the return volatility in the Chinese stock market during the COVID-19 outbreak. We present two main findings. First, we show that stocks with higher level of margin-trading activity exhibit higher return volatility. The COVID-19 outbreak amplifies the destabilizing effects of margin-trading activity. Second, no evidence shows that short selling destabilizes the stock market in general. However, we observe that intensified short-selling activity is associated with lower return volatility when infection risk is high during the COVID-19 crisis.

Rationale: Extraterrestrial amines and ammonia are critical ingredients for the formation of astrobiologically important compounds such as amino acids and nucleobases. However, conventional methods for analyzing the composition and isotopic ratios of volatile amines suffer from lengthy derivatization and purification procedures, high sample mass consumption, and chromatographic interferences from derivatization reagents and non-target compounds.

Methods: Here we demonstrate a highly efficient method to analyze the composition and compound specific isotopic ratios of C to C amines as well as ammonia based on solid phase micro-extraction (SPME) on-fiber derivatization.

This study evaluated the use of the essential oil of Lippia origanoides (EOLO) as an anesthetic for juvenile pacu, Piaractus mesopotamicus. Two experiments were performed. In Experiment I, anesthetic induction and recovery times and ventilatory frequency (VF) were determined for fish (n= 48; 29.

The current study aims to elicit information regarding the tail risk transmission mechanism between crude oil (CO) and selected clean energy (CE) stock indices across time and during certain economic events. A Time-Varying Parameter Vector Auto-Regressive model (TVP-VAR) paired with the conditional autoregressive value-at-risk (CAViaR) approach was used to investigate data from January 1, 2015 to December 29, 2022. Overall, we show that an increased vulnerability to tail risk and deficits might be linked to dynamic spillover over examined markets.

This study analyzed the nutritional composition, physicochemical properties, and volatile profiles of three major bovine head muscles-medial pterygoid, masseter, and buccinator-to reduce byproduct resource waste and increase the utilization rate of bovine head to establish a foundation for its industrial use. Compared to tenderloin, which is popular among consumers, these head muscles were found to be rich in collagen (4.90-13.

Fundamental constraints and questions from the study of martian meteorites and the need for returned samples.

Physical materials from planetary bodies are crucial for understanding fundamental processes that constrain the evolution of the solar system, as samples can be analyzed at high precision and accuracy in Earth-based laboratories. Mars is the only planet outside of Earth from which we possess samples in the form of meteorites. Martian meteorites (n > 350) have enabled constraints to be placed on various aspects of the red planet's formation and evolution, notably: that Mars accreted and differentiated rapidly; that the planet has a complex volatile element evolution; and that it has always been volcanically active with a rich and diverse magmatic history.
