Dietary Intake of Micronutrients and Use of Vitamin and/or Mineral Supplements: Brazilian National Food Survey.

Nutrients

November 2024

Postgraduate Program in Epidemiology, School of Medicine, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre 90035-190, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

Background/objectives: Vitamin and/or mineral supplements are designed to correct micronutrient deficiencies or maintain adequate intake. However, evidence suggests the indiscriminate use of these products, particularly among populations that already meet their micronutrient requirements through diet. This study aims to estimate the prevalence of vitamin and/or mineral supplement use and assess the dietary intake of micronutrients among users and non-users in the Brazilian adult and elderly populations.

This study aimed to identify the biochemical parameters that determine the occurrence of glaucoma and assess the correlation between oxidative stress and clinical data in patients with glaucoma and healthy controls. We enrolled 169 participants; the glaucoma group comprised 104 patients with primary open-angle, pseudoexfoliation, or angle-closure glaucoma, and the control group comprised 65 healthy individuals. Serum concentrations of selenium (Se), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn); Cu/Zn ratio; and total antioxidant status were measured in both groups.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to investigate how oat bran rich in β-glucans affects the absorption of vitamins and minerals, particularly in rats with deficiencies in vitamins D, B group, and trace elements like iron, copper, and zinc.
  • After a period of 23 days inducing micronutrient deficiencies, rats were given a semi-synthetic diet supplemented with missing micronutrients for 7 days, with some groups also receiving β-glucans.
  • Results showed that replenishing vitamins B1, B2, and B6 eliminated deficiencies, while β-glucans enhanced iron absorption, evidenced by increased plasma iron levels and decreased urinary iron excretion.
