For tetraphenylethene (TPE) derivatives, it is difficult to determine the arrangement of the molecules in the aggregation state because disordered aggregation usually occurs. To solve the problem, we have explored a novel and facile strategy to investigate the aggregation mode of a TPE derivative framework in which the two neighboring carbons of two phenyl moieties at the same ethylene carbon were linked with an alkoxyl chain (C4) (denoted as TPEC4). The XRD measurements on the particles obtained in a DMSO/HO mixture ( = 60%) showed sharp peaks which is consistent with the simulated XRD patterns on the basis of a single crystal structure of TPEC4, indicating well-ordered molecular packing in the aggregated state. The CH/π-interaction and solvophobicity driven self-assembly behaviour of the compound was observed in the DMSO/HO mixture. A face to face molecular packing structure that arises from quadruple intermolecular CH/π-interactions of the tetraphenylethylenes is the key motif for self-assembly in solution. The unique blue-red shifted emission in the DMSO/HO mixture associated with aggregated behaviour of the compound was also investigated. This discovery will provide the basis for theoretical research and the rational design of TPE-based luminogens.

A novel cyanine compound based on the conjugated perylene-benzothiazole system (PBI) as a colorimetric and fluorometric dual-channel sensor for cyanide (CN ) detection was synthesized and characterized via UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy. The discovery of new coordination compounds with anticancer properties is an active field of research due to the severe side effects of platinum-based compounds currently used in chemotherapy. In the search for new agents for the treatment of cancer, unsymmetrical NO-tetradentate ligand (H2L1 and H2L2) and their Ni(II) and Zn(II) asymmetric complexes (NiII-L1-2 and ZnII-L1-2) have been synthesized and fully characterized. H NMR studies revealed that the ligands and complexes were stable in mixtures of DMSO : DO (9 : 1).

The structures of equimolar mixtures of the commonly used polar aprotic solvents dimethylformamide (DMF) and dimethylacetamide (DMAc) in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) have been investigated via neutron diffraction augmented by extensive hydrogen/deuterium isotopic substitution. Detailed 3-dimensional structural models of these solutions have been derived from the neutron data via Empirical Potential Structure Refinement (EPSR). The intermolecular center-of-mass (CoM) distributions show that the first coordination shell of the amides comprises ∼13-14 neighbors, of which approximately half are DMSO.

Herein, we have investigated the association behavior of bovine serum albumin (BSA) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) using the conductivity method in HO and HO + organic mixed solvents at different temperatures. The association phenomenon was detected from the deviation of the conductivity changes with enhancing the surfactant concentration and changes of numerous physico-chemical properties, such as CMC, α, β and thermodynamic variables (∆G, ∆H and ∆S). The values of CMC for the CTAB + BSA system in 10 % (v/v) solvents follow the trend: CMC < CMC < CMC < CMC < CMC.

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-based magnetorheological plastomer (MRP) possesses excellent magnetically dependent mechanical properties such as the magnetorheological effect (MR effect) when exposed to an external magnetic field. PVA-based MRP also shows a shear stiffening (ST) effect, which is very beneficial in fabricating pressure sensor. Thus, it can automatically respond to external stimuli such as shear force without the magnetic field.
