The syntheses of hydroxy-substituted kynurenic acid (KYNA) derivatives have been achieved by an optimised Conrad-Limpach procedure. The derivatives were then reacted with morpholine and paraformaldehyde, as a representative amine and aldehyde, in a modified Mannich reaction. The newly introduced substituents altered the preferred reaction centre of the KYNA skeleton. A systematic investigation of substitutions was carried out, using different reaction conditions, resulting in mono- or disubstituted derivatives. Product selectivity and regioselectivity were rationalised by DFT calculations disclosing HOMO distribution and NBO charges on the potential nucleophilic centres in the anion of the appropriate KYNA ester assumed to be active components towards the iminium ion intermediate.

In this study, four different arginine-modified lignin composites (Lig-Arg-x) were synthesized via the Mannich reaction, followed by the preparation of Lig-Arg-x/FeO magnetic nanoparticles (NPs) using hydrothermal reduction. The magnetic particles were characterized, and their emulsification properties were investigated. The highest grafting degree was achieved at a 1:1 M ratio of arginine to lignin.

Lignin is one of the most abundant and underused biopolymers in nature with limited antimicrobial activities. Herein, this work aimed to enhance the antimicrobial activity of lignin extracted from waste rice straw by ultrasonic-alkali integrated extraction (USP-AT) and modify the alkali lignin through Mannich reaction to improve its antimicrobial properties. The effects of ultrasonic pretreatment (USP) time on the chemical structure, morphology, antioxidant, and antibacterial activities of lignin were studied.

Despite the targeted- and immunotherapies used in the past decade, survival rate among patients with metastatic melanoma remains low, therefore, melanoma is responsible for the majority of skin cancer-related deaths. The ongoing investigation of natural antitumor agents, the nonpsychoactive cannabinoid, cannabigerol (CBG) found in Cannabis sativa is emerging as a promising candidate. CBG offers a potential therapeutic role in the treatment of melanoma demonstrating cell growth inhibition in some tumors.

The reaction between glycine-type aminonaphthol derivatives substituted with 2- or 1-naphthol and indole or 7-azaindole has been tested. Starting from 2-naphthol as a precursor, the reaction led to the formation of ring-closed products, while in the case of a 1-naphthol-type precursor, the desired biaryl ester was isolated. The synthesis of a bifunctional precursor starting from 5-chloro-8-hydroxyquinoline, morpholine, and ethyl glyoxylate via modified Mannich reaction is reported.

The urgent need to address the current climate crisis has led to concerted efforts to develop low-cost and sustainable methods to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) and negative emissions technologies (NET's) offer the most promising paths forward to offsetting global emissions. In this study, we explore the potential of kraft lignin, a readily available biomaterial, as a low-cost alternative for the development of a CO sorbent.
