We propose the hypothesis that small high-density lipoprotein (HDL) particles reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD) by virtue of their capacity to exchange lipids, affecting neuronal membrane composition and vascular and synaptic functions. Concentrations of small HDLs in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and plasma were measured in 180 individuals ≥60 years of age using ion mobility methodology. Small HDL concentrations in CSF were positively associated with performance in three domains of cognitive function independent of apolipoprotein E (APOE) ε4 status, age, sex, and years of education. Moreover, there was a significant correlation between levels of small HDLs in CSF and plasma. Further studies will be aimed at determining whether specific components of small HDL exchange across the blood, brain, and CSF barriers, and developing approaches to exploit small HDLs for therapeutic purposes.

The fundamental role of qualitative alterations of lipoproteins in the early development of atherosclerosis has been widely demonstrated. Modified low-density lipoproteins (LDL), such as oxidized LDL (oxLDL), small dense LDL (sdLDL), and electronegative LDL [LDL(-)], are capable of triggering the atherogenic process, favoring the subendothelial accumulation of cholesterol and promoting inflammatory, proliferative, and apoptotic processes characteristic of atherosclerotic lesions. In contrast, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) prevents and/or reverses these atherogenic effects.

Objective: Midkine (MK) is a member of a small protein family that includes pleiotrophin. MK levels are elevated in obese patients and have a pro-arthrogenic effect through various pathophysiological processes including vascular inflammation and atherogenesis. This study aimed to investigate the association between serum MK levels and several atherosclerotic risk factors in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).

Background: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of a nutraceutical combination given to insulin-resistant overweight patients with altered lipid profiles. To this end, an observational study was designed in which 74 individuals (50 females and 24 males) underwent an observational period of 3 months.
Methods: During this time, a specific nutraceutical combination containing myo-inositol, glycine, , α-lipoic acid, phlorizin, zinc, vitamin B, and chromium picolinate was administered.

The aim of this study was to revisit the complex relationship between inflammation, oxidative stress and lipid metabolism in dogs with hypercortisolism (HC). Fourteen dogs newly diagnosed with HC and an equal number of healthy counterparts of similar age and markers of oxidative stress (AOPP, TBARS, TAC, GSH, PON-1, and UA) and inflammation (NLR, PLR, SII, HPT, CHE, CP, and Hcy) were included in the study. To determine the lipid profiles, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels were measured, and the electrophoretic separation of lipoproteins was performed.

Context: Subclinical thyroid dysfunction (ScTD) comprising subclinical hypothyroidism (SHypo) and subclinical hyperthyroidism (SHyper) has been associated with increased risk for cardiovascular events.
Objective: To assess associations between ScTD and cardiovascular risk factors (cvRFs) according to age and sex.
Design And Setting: Pooled individual participant data analysis of large prospective cohort studies from the Thyroid Studies Collaboration.
