Purpose: With the widespread introduction of dual energy computed tomography (DECT), applications utilizing the spectral information to perform material decomposition became available. Among these, a popular application is to decompose contrast-enhanced CT images into virtual non-contrast (VNC) or virtual non-iodine images and into iodine maps. In 2021, photon-counting CT (PCCT) was introduced, which is another spectral CT modality.

How I do it - focused Sylvian approach for clipping of middle cerebral artery aneurysms.

Acta Neurochir (Wien)

January 2025

Department of Neurosurgery, Medical Faculty and University Hospital Düsseldorf, Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, Moorenstr. 5, 40225, Düsseldorf, Germany.

Background: The Focused Sylvian Approach (FSA) is a refined, minimally invasive technique for clipping small to medium-sized middle cerebral artery (MCA) aneurysms, prioritizing safety and aesthetics.

Method: The craniotomy remains confined to the superior temporal line, with the incision concealed within the temporal muscle. The Sylvian fissure is carefully dissected to preserve venous structures.

Background: Normative percentile (NP) quantifies brain atrophy by comparing regional brain volumes of a subject against age and sex‐matched cognitively normal populations. Accurate intracranial volume (ICV) adjustment is vital in NP quantification to minimize the effect of an individual’s head size. However, which intracranial volume adjustment method yields reliable normative percentiles remains unclear.

Microstructural assessment of the locus coeruleus‐entorhinal cortex pathway and association with ATN markers in patients with cognitive impairment.

Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

Laboratory of Alzheimer's Neuroimaging and Epidemiology ‐ LANE, IRCCS Istituto Centro San Giovanni di Dio Fatebenefratelli, Brescia, Italy

Background: This study investigated microstructural features of the locus coeruleus to entorhinal cortex pathway (LC‐EC) in relation to amyloid (A), tau (T), neurodegeneration (N) markers and cognitive impairment in memory clinic patients.

Method: 124 participants were recruited from the Geneva Memory Clinic (n=30 cognitively unimpaired – CU; n=80 MCI and n=14 dementia ‐ CI) and underwent clinical assessment, 3T MRI scan including diffusion weighted imaging, amyloid PET, and tau PET. Diffusivity indices (fractional anisotropy ‐ FA, mean, axial and radial diffusivities ‐ MD, AxD, RD) were assessed in the LC‐EC pathway using a probabilistic atlas.

Background: Glymphatic system dysfunction as characterized by increased MRI‐visible Perivascular Spaces (PVS) is speculated to play a role in the acceleration of amyloid accumulation in Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). However, while PVS is also prevalent amongst Vascular Dementia (VD), the pathological distinctions between regional PVS in AD‐ and VD‐driven cohorts remain largely unknown. Through a mixed dementia cohort, we examined these pathology‐driven localization patterns via automated PVS segmentations from T2‐weighted MRI.
